As a lifelong gamer, I think the seventh generation of consoles had the biggest impact on me. No other console era has given me so many memorable gaming experiences.
No matter the type of game, who made it, how it was designed, or how much money was spent, there were so many truly special games released that I’m still discovering them years later.
Video games look a lot different now than they did twenty years ago, and while that’s not always negative, it often means big-budget games prioritize things other than just being fun, something that used to be the main point of playing.
I’ve put together a list of ten fantastic PlayStation 3 games that are enjoyable right from the beginning, both for remembering old favorites and suggesting some titles for anyone new to the last generation of consoles.
10. Resistance: Fall of a Man
Made with Heart for Action Lovers

Before Insomniac Games became known for its superhero games, they surprised everyone with the impressive shooter, Resistance: Fall of Man, a departure from their usual platforming titles.
It was a huge surprise to see the team behind beloved franchises like Spyro and Ratchet & Clank release a science fiction first-person shooter about an alien invasion.
Beyond just being a surprising game, Resistance: Fall of a Man gained a dedicated following among fans of the genre. It featured a captivating story mode that kept players engaged, and its multiplayer experience was considered as good as, or even better than, Call of Duty.
The PlayStation 3 had a lot of war games, but Resistance: Fall of Man stood out. It wasn’t a huge departure from the others, admittedly, but it felt special enough to be considered underrated, and it still holds up that way.
9. Uncharted 2: Among Thieves
The Standard for TPS
Many people might be surprised to find Uncharted 2: Among Thieves ranked so highly, but even though I personally don’t think it’s quite as amazing as some others do, it’s clear that the game set a new standard for storytelling and visual spectacle when it was released.
Naughty Dog consistently creates incredibly exciting games that prioritize thrilling action over strict realism. They’ve crafted a larger-than-life Nathan Drake – a charismatic and unbelievably resilient hero who’s a joy to watch overcome impossible odds.
This game is a huge step up from the last one, delivering a thrilling story mode, exciting gunfights, and even some clever puzzles. These puzzles offer a nice break from the action and add more to the game’s story.
Even when the game slows down for a moment or features simple conversations, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves keeps things moving at a good speed, so it never feels dull. Instead, every part of the game builds excitement for what comes next.
8. Katamari Forever
A Misunderstood Tribute
To everyone’s surprise, I’ve chosen to highlight Katamari Forever, a game that doesn’t always get the recognition it deserves. I think it perfectly captures what makes the Katamari series so enjoyable.
Okay, so as a longtime fan, I’ll admit this one doesn’t really break new ground for those of us who’ve played them all, and the music isn’t anything I’ll be humming later. It’s not the prettiest game in the series, either. But honestly? The core gameplay is just so addictive. I think it’s actually up there with the very best in the whole franchise when it comes to how fun it is to actually play.
You might be wondering what makes this game so fun, and honestly, it’s hard to put into words. Imagine controlling a huge ball that grows bigger and bigger as it rolls over everything, eventually becoming planet-sized. And every few seconds, you’re treated to a vibrant explosion of colors and sounds representing all of human culture – it’s just incredibly entertaining.
Okay, so Katamari Forever isn’t for everyone – it’s totally weird and definitely not what most people are used to. But honestly, if it clicks with you, get ready! It’s one of those games that just completely pulls you in and takes you on an amazing ride. It’s a special experience, that’s for sure.
7. Heavenly Sword
Excellent and Ephemeral
During the PlayStation 3 era, many action games with close-combat fighting tried to copy the style of God of War. This led to gamers becoming less enthusiastic about the genre, and some excellent games like Heavenly Sword didn’t get the recognition they deserved.
The game borrowed heavily from what made Santa Monica Studio’s titles successful – things like quick-time events, grand cinematic moments, and a troubled main character. It didn’t really offer anything fresh or original… but it’s still enjoyable, like sticking with a classic vanilla ice cream even though you’ve had it countless times before.
The game offered stunning visuals, exciting combos, and a combat system that was slower-paced but highly strategic. It was an ideal choice for players already familiar with Kratos’ story who were looking for a similar experience with its own distinct personality.
Honestly, with its unique combat system where you really feel the weight of the sword, plus some clever puzzles and a beautiful art style, Heavenly Sword should be up there with the greats. It doesn’t get the recognition it deserves, though – it’s more of a hidden gem that those of us who’ve played it absolutely adore.
6. Killzone 2
Guerrilla Games at its Best
Guerrilla Games is now famous for the Horizon games, but many longtime fans remember that they first gained recognition with the Killzone series, and the second game in that series remains a standout title.
If you talked to gamers who played back in the day, you’d be surprised how many would say Killzone 2 was the best first-person shooter ever made. Its single-player story and online multiplayer worked so well together that it was hard to disagree with them.
Right from the start, as soon as you began playing with the weapons and understood how the game worked – how enemies moved and bullets flew – it was clear that Killzone 2 really maximized the PlayStation 3’s capabilities, all while remaining enjoyable and true to itself.
It’s hard to fully convey just how impressive Killzone 2 was, but even if you missed it when it first came out, it remains a fantastic game we’d recommend to anyone, no matter what kind of games you usually enjoy.
5. inFAMOUS 2
Refined and Captivating
Open-world games haven’t always been as common as they are now, so when a developer tried their hand at the genre – particularly with the high quality of inFAMOUS 2 – it was really well-received.
I loved Prototype so much that I was searching for another game with the same feel. Sucker Punch’s series not only delivered, but actually surpassed my expectations.
Running around New Marais is incredibly fun, mostly thanks to how smoothly and powerfully Cole MacGrath moves. It’s also satisfying to complete missions, gain new abilities, and make impactful, though often black-and-white, decisions that drive the story forward.
I didn’t care for the way the game handled moral choices when it first came out, and I still don’t, but inFAMOUS 2 created a solid gameplay style that many games still use today. So, it deserves recognition for both how influential it was and how good it actually was.
4. LittleBigPlanet
Fun in its Purest Form
Working on this piece made me realize how many great Sony game series have been overlooked, which is disappointing. But none affect me quite as much as LittleBigPlanet.
Even though this game wasn’t necessarily a commercial hit, it’s a major reason why the PlayStation 3 was, and remains, a great console. Its incredible creativity, emotional depth, and imaginative design are truly exceptional.
No matter if you’re a serious gamer, someone who plays occasionally, a kid, or an adult, this game is instantly appealing. Its beautiful design, satisfying gameplay, and the incredible content created by other players make it enjoyable for everyone.
LittleBigPlanet was a truly special game that brought players together in a unique way for its time. Even now, I still fondly remember the wonderful emotions it stirred within me.
3. Gran Turismo 5
The Turning Point for Realism
It’s hard to say exactly when racing games moved from simple, arcade-style gameplay to more realistic simulations, but Gran Turismo 5 was a major turning point.
The game was incredibly immersive, thanks to its realistic graphics and amazing dynamic weather. It set a new standard that traditional arcade games simply couldn’t match.

It was incredibly satisfying to drive powerful cars on beautiful and challenging tracks. While the series has gotten better over time, it hasn’t quite recaptured that same level of refined detail and immersive experience.
From the incredibly realistic way cars handle to their stunning detail and amazing sound, Gran Turismo 5 is captivating right from the start. While I generally prefer simpler, arcade-style racing games, this one is so good it makes me wonder if I should reconsider my preference.
2. Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots
The Climax of an Unforgettable Franchise
You might be surprised to see Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots on a list of immediately enjoyable games, considering its long opening cutscene. However, what’s entertaining isn’t always about instant action – it can come in different forms.
With Hideo Kojima’s games, part of the fun is wondering what unusual and creative thing he’ll do next. No matter how long you’ve been a fan or how many of his games you’ve played, he consistently manages to surprise players.
The cutscenes are enjoyable, ranging from captivating and insightful to simply hilarious. But Guns of the Patriots also delivers solid gameplay, and for a long time, many fans considered it the most fun entry in the series until the release of the fifth game.
I’m a big fan of stealth games, and especially the work of Hideo Kojima. What really grabbed me, though, was how much more polished the tactical gameplay became after Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater – I was hooked right away.
1. God of War 3
The Greatest Divine Massacre
From the very first glimpse, God of War 3 immediately grabs your attention and builds incredible excitement. How could you not be thrilled when the game opens with a furious hero scaling a massive titan to confront Poseidon?
Kratos’s journey of revenge is an incredibly epic and satisfying experience, setting a new standard for action games. Its massive scope, polished details, and overall impact make it truly unique and a standout title in the genre.
The ending of Kratos’s story is truly unforgettable. Every part of it, including the challenging bosses, stunning locations, exciting battles, and even the occasional puzzles, is remarkable.
Each time you meet a new god from Olympus, successfully complete an action-based challenge, or gain a new weapon or ability, it feels incredibly empowering – like living out the most amazing power fantasy imaginable.
God of War 3 begins at an incredibly grand scale, surpassing the climaxes of many other games. It continues to build from there, reaching an almost unbelievable high point, so it feels right to end this list with such an epic title.
