Ubisoft has revealed that a new update, Title Update 1.1.9, is coming to Assassin’s Creed Shadows on April 7th. This update will enhance the game’s visuals on the PlayStation 5 Pro by improving its PSSR upscaling technology in all game modes.
A new post on the PlayStation Blog shows video comparisons of how an upcoming update will improve graphics in all three visual modes on the PS5 Pro. This news comes shortly after Ubisoft announced they are finishing support for Assassin’s Creed Shadows.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows is out now on Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC (available on Steam, Epic Games Store, and Ubisoft Connect). You can read Dave’s review here and my review of the Switch 2 version here.

Starting April 7th, PlayStation 5 Pro players of Assassin’s Creed Shadows will receive an upgraded version of PSSR (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution) with Title Update 1.1.9. PSSR is a technology that uses artificial intelligence to improve image quality while upscaling, and it’s already enhanced the resolution of over 50 games on PS5 Pro.
Assassin’s Creed Shadows has always worked with the original PSSR technology, and now it will be one of the first games to use the updated version. The new version launches on April 7th at 7:00 AM Pacific Time.
Here’s a deeper look at the optimization it brings to the image quality overall:
Improved image quality across all modes
The improved PSSR technology consistently makes the game look better. Environments are clearer and more stable, and small details are rendered with greater accuracy.
The improved PSSR technology makes Assassin’s Creed Shadows look much sharper and more stable. It removes blurry visuals caused by movement and vibration, creating a smoother, more immersive experience that keeps players fully focused on the game.

The advantages of this new technology work in all PS5 Pro modes – Performance, Balanced, and Quality – each of which renders games at different resolutions. This new feature lets each mode look more visually impressive, meaning you don’t have to sacrifice performance for better image quality. No matter if you prioritize smoother gameplay or a clearer picture, the result is a sharper and more stable image than you’ve seen before.
Better handling of complex rendering
Assassin’s Creed Shadows boasts lush environments, realistic lighting thanks to ray tracing, and lots of dynamic visual effects. However, these features make it technically demanding for image upscaling and reconstruction techniques.
The new PSSR delivers particularly strong results in these scenarios:
Grass and other plants now move much more realistically in Assassin’s Creed Shadows. We’ve upgraded our wind system, called Atmos, to create fluid and natural motion for vegetation across large areas. This is particularly noticeable with details like grass, which are difficult to render because they’re constantly moving and appearing/disappearing as you move. Our improved PSSR technology keeps these details sharp up close – you can clearly see individual blades of grass – and also makes distant trees and plants look crisper and cleaner.
Particle effects now look clearer and more stable. Because these effects often mix transparency with individual movement, it can be tricky to figure out how they should move with the camera – should they follow the particles themselves, the background, or a bit of both? Our new PSSR technology solves this problem, ensuring particle effects remain consistent and visually appealing, even during fast action, and helping to maintain the cinematic quality of the game world.
Ray tracing creates realistic lighting, but it can also introduce visual noise because it doesn’t calculate every possible light path. This noise appears as subtle or noticeable variations in the image, and can become more prominent when the image is enlarged. Our new processing technology, PSSR, improves how these random signals are handled. This leads to more accurate and stable ray-traced effects like reflections and shadows, even in detailed scenes with lots of objects or complicated lighting. It minimizes the need for manual tweaking, resulting in a consistently clear and visually appealing image.
A smoother, more consistent experience
The updated PSSR delivers a noticeably sharper, clearer, and more detailed experience, offering greater immersion without sacrificing quality.
As a fan, I was really excited to hear how smoothly the upgraded PSSR was added to Assassin’s Creed Shadows. Apparently, according to Technical Architect Nicolas Lopez, the changes to the code were surprisingly small – almost exactly like when they first added PSSR! What’s even cooler is that despite the minimal effort, the upgrade really makes the game look better – a noticeable jump in image quality. It’s amazing when you get such a big visual improvement without a ton of extra work!
Get ready for April 7
We hope you found our detailed look at how we created the updated PlayStation 5 Pro version of Assassin’s Creed interesting.
Assassin’s Creed Shadows is out now for PlayStation 5 and the new PlayStation 5 Pro, and has received a year of updates. Improvements using PSSR technology will be added starting April 7th.
