Star Wars’ New Series Pays Off The Franchise’s Best Retcon

After years of setup, a clever change to the Star Wars story is finally coming to fruition in just a few days. Because the Star Wars universe has a complex timeline, adjustments to established lore are fairly common. In fact, the recommended way to watch the films has shifted over time – originally, viewers watched the original trilogy first, then the prequels, and finally the sequels.

If you watch the Star Wars films in order of release, the prequels came out first, followed by the original trilogy, and then the sequels. This doesn’t include the spin-off movies or the many Star Wars TV series. Those shows are set at different points in the timeline, and sometimes add details that change things that were previously established – a practice often called ‘retconning’.

The series Obi-Wan Kenobi introduced a previously unseen encounter between Obi-Wan and Darth Vader, taking place between the events of Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope. These kinds of story changes, known as retcons, are common in Star Wars, and often happen as the franchise is expanded through television series.

The most clever and insightful change to the story happened over ten years ago, and its impact is finally going to be fully realized.

Star Wars Retconning Maul’s Death Was A Great Decision

The story change, or ‘retcon,’ involves Darth Maul’s supposed death in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace. Originally, he was cut in half by Obi-Wan Kenobi, but George Lucas later decided to bring the character back. Star Wars: The Clone Wars revealed that Maul actually survived, fueled by his anger. He managed to build mechanical legs to keep going, but eventually descended into madness.

Savage Opress eventually found Maul and brought him back to Dathomir, where Mother Talzin helped him regain his mental stability. Following this, Maul became a key figure in The Clone Wars, its continuation Star Wars Rebels, and numerous other stories throughout the larger Star Wars universe.

Bringing Maul back from the dead was a smart move by George Lucas. It allowed the character to become one of the most interesting and well-developed villains in all of Star Wars, particularly through his appearances in the animated series. Some of the best scenes in both The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels feature Maul, like his involvement in the Siege of Mandalore or his final fight with Obi-Wan Kenobi.

Shadow Lord Will Pay Off Star Wars’ Maul Retcon In Full

Even though bringing Maul back has clearly been a good choice, Star Wars hasn’t fully explored the possibilities—until now. In just a few days, on April 6, 2026, Maul – Shadow Lord will premiere on Disney+. This show marks the first time Maul will be the main character, instead of simply appearing as a villain.

The upcoming comic series, Shadow Lord, will explore how Darth Maul rebuilt his criminal organization after the events of Revenge of the Sith. It’s designed to connect the final season of The Clone Wars with the Star Wars Rebels series. The story will likely incorporate ideas originally intended for a sequel to Solo: A Star Wars Story, which established Maul as the hidden leader of the Crimson Dawn crime syndicate.

As a huge Star Wars fan, I’m really excited about giving Maul his own show. It feels like the franchise is finally leaning into the fact that they brought him back, and honestly, it’s a smart move. They’ve used him well in other projects, but never quite like this. Considering how well Maul has been written over the years, and how fantastic Star Wars’ animated series usually are, I think this is the payoff to that bold decision they made over a decade ago – and it’s about time!
