War of the Visions: Final Fantasy Brave Exvius shuts down in Japan on May 28

Square Enix is shutting down War of the Visions: Final Fantasy Brave Exvius in Japan on May 28th at 3:00 PM Japan time. This means the mobile strategy game will no longer be available. They’ve also stopped selling in-game currency right away.

A similar announcement about the game ending was made almost a year ago, but it only affected the English version. That version launched in March 2020 and ran for just over five years, closing in May 2025. The Japanese version, which started in November 2019, will have been available for six and a half years when it ends.

Producer Watanabe shared more details about why the Japanese servers are shutting down. The team explored creating an offline version of the game, but many features – including player interactions, battles, and guild activities – needed an internet connection, making it too difficult. Instead, they’re working on ways to preserve the game’s story through things like memorial books and videos.

Even though the game is ending, Square Enix will continue to host special ‘Grand Finale’ events for Japanese players of War of the Visions until the service officially stops. From April 1st to 16th, players can also vote for their favorite characters and submit their names to be included in the closing credits video Square Enix plans to release on May 28th.
