In the early 2000s, as Marvel and DC dominated the superhero movie scene, Dark Horse Comics’ Hellboy finally got his moment in the spotlight. Two films, both directed by Guillermo del Toro and starring Ron Perlman, brought the half-demon’s story to life and quickly became a beloved cult classic that fans still enjoy. While del Toro has directed many films, these Hellboy movies, along with his 2002 film Blade II, represent some of his few forays into the superhero genre.
Despite several live-action versions of Hellboy, Ron Perlman’s performance is still considered the best. Perlman himself says the role is special to him because of his collaboration with director Guillermo del Toro on the two films, making the whole experience unforgettable.

At MegaCon 2026 in Orlando, Florida, Ron Perlman spoke with Joe Deckelmeier of MovieWeb about his collaboration with director Guillermo del Toro on the Hellboy films from 2004 and 2008. Perlman described their connection as something special from the very beginning, saying it was “destined to be way more than a professional relationship.” He explained that del Toro recognized his strengths and actively campaigned for seven years to cast him as Hellboy, having originally used him as the character’s model.
From the moment we met, it felt like our connection would become something beyond just work. We clicked instantly – our first dinner felt like the thirtieth, as if we’d known each other for years. We quickly became comfortable and familiar, and then our creative collaboration naturally followed. Guillermo really understands my strengths as an actor and consistently writes roles that showcase them. In fact, he wrote for nearly every character I’ve played with him. People always assumed I was improvising my lines as Hellboy, but every single word I spoke in both ‘Hellboy’ films was actually scripted by Guillermo.
He explained that the creator chose him as inspiration for the character because he needed someone flawed, but not simply lazy. He wasn’t looking for someone defined by basic addictions or silly habits, but rather someone who was capable of more yet consistently underachieved, especially when faced with important responsibilities. The creator specifically said, ‘Who’s the most underachieving, lazy person?’ and landed on Ron Perlman as the perfect fit for Hellboy. He then spent seven years fighting to get the project made, believing Perlman embodied that potential perfectly.
I was really struck by what Ron Perlman said on the panel. He basically admitted Guillermo del Toro is the only director who could convince him to put on that Hellboy makeup again for a third film – and he’s still eager to do it! He spoke so warmly about the role and how much of a career boost it was, really emphasizing del Toro’s vision for the character and how fondly he remembers working on those movies. It’s clear Hellboy, and del Toro, hold a special place with him.
Currently, there are no confirmed plans or even whispers about a new Hellboy movie, meaning neither Ron Perlman nor Guillermo del Toro are slated to finish their planned trilogy. Despite this, fans are still hoping these talented creators will one day return to bring another exciting Hellboy story to life, as the comics offer plenty of material for a future film.
