HBO Just Dropped the Trailer for the Harry Potter Reboot

I just saw the first teaser for the new HBO series, and honestly, I’m already hooked! It was announced way back in April 2023, so the wait has been long, but it looks like it’ll finally be here in early 2027. I’m counting down the days!

As a huge fan, I’ve been waiting for this for ages, and the new trailer finally gives us a proper look at this incredible magical world they’re building! It came out just after Warner Bros. gave us a first glimpse and let some content creators visit the set. The timing is amazing – it dropped on Tolkien Reading Day, alongside some other exciting news. And the best part? They’ve announced it’s coming to us at Christmas 2026 – much sooner than I expected!

Harry Potter Saves Fantasy TV

Since Game of Thrones concluded in 2019, very few shows have reached the same level of popularity as it or Harry Potter. The Harry Potter books, a seven-part series by J.K. Rowling, were made into eight movies between 2001 and 2011, launching the careers of many new actors and showcasing established British and Irish talent.

The latest Harry Potter series continues a trend: it features mostly young, relatively unknown actors alongside established, critically praised veterans.

The upcoming fantasy series is led by Francesca Gardiner, the showrunner and writer known for her work on Succession. Mark Mylod, who also worked on Succession, is an executive producer and will direct several episodes of the new show, which has been in development for ten years.

The main characters in HBO’s Harry Potter series are played by Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley, and Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger. Janet McTeer stars as Minerva McGonagall, and Nick Frost plays Rubeus Hagrid.

The show has now cast most of the main characters for its first season, which will probably cover the events of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone (known as Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone in the United States). While the HBO series will retell the familiar story, it’s being presented as a more accurate adaptation of the book. The only actor returning from previous Harry Potter films is Warwick Davis, who will once again play Filius Flitwick.

I recently spoke with Davis, and they assured me these new projects are remarkably true to the source material. As you can imagine, telling the same story means we’re seeing echoes of the original films on set. It’s a strange experience, though, being back at Leavesden Studios – the very place where we filmed everything before – and revisiting these moments all over again.

Following the massive success of Game of Thrones, many networks have tried to replicate it with shows like HBO’s House of the Dragon, Netflix’s The Witcher and Shadow and Bone, and Prime Video’s The Wheel of Time and The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. However, most of these series have received mixed reactions due to changes from the original source material, and a couple have already been cancelled. This brings us to Harry Potter.

The Harry Potter Novels Weren’t as Faithful as Some Might Think

Despite valid criticisms – like the films taking significant liberties with the original books, and some dated special effects – the eight Harry Potter movies were very popular. While the actors weren’t always the ages you’d expect from the characters (a problem the new reboot aims to solve), the cast was generally well-liked. The announcement of a new Harry Potter reboot in April 2023 was met with some doubt, and understandably so.

The last Harry Potter movie was released in 2011, and it was twelve years before any news about a new project emerged – shortly after the final Fantastic Beasts film, which doesn’t have a confirmed future. Initially, excitement was cautious, as the first hint was just a single, small photo showing Harry Potter in his Quidditch uniform from behind, teasing a return to the original story.

The initial preview shows that the new Harry Potter series will stay true to the beloved books and films, welcoming both dedicated fans and newcomers to a magical adventure.

Harry Potter will premiere on HBO Max on Christmas 2026..
