I can’t believe this! A woman in Australia actually got fined over $1,400 – that’s about A$2,000 – for sticking googly eyes on a really expensive sculpture! Apparently, it was worth around $100,000, and they considered it ‘graffiti.’ It’s just…googly eyes! I mean, it’s silly, but I guess damaging art, even with googly eyes, isn’t okay.
I still can’t believe this happened! Back in early November, pictures started circulating online of this sculpture – everyone calls it the ‘Blue Blob’ – and someone had stuck googly eyes on it! It’s just wild to me that someone would do that to a piece of art that cost around AU$136,000 (about $88,000 US dollars) and had only been up for a few months.
Nineteen-year-old Amelia Vanderhorst was accused of property damage after city surveillance cameras identified her as being involved in the incident, according to the Mount Gambier City Council.
Twenty-year-old Vanderhost admitted guilt in court on March 24th, saying she wasn’t feeling well when the incident happened.
Cast In Blue graffiti leads to fine and community service
Michael Hill, the lawyer for Vanderhorst, said the initial charge of property damage was changed to graffiti, according to the BBC.
“She is committed to making better decisions moving forward,” Hill added.
At a court hearing on March 24th, the 20-year-old was instructed to pay AU$2,000 (about $1,394 or £1,040) to cover the damages and perform 60 hours of community service. Police originally thought the damage was worth less than AU$2,500 (around $1,600 USD).

So, apparently, this artist, Vanderhorst, shared a picture of the sculpture – it’s called ‘Cast in Blue,’ by the way – on Facebook just a few days after someone caught her on camera sticking googly eyes on it! It’s a funny story, and she posted about it herself.
I tried to get help with my legal fees by asking for donations online, but it didn’t work out. I ended up giving everyone their money back and just cancelled the whole crowdfunding thing.
