10 Greatest Games of the Last 10 Years, Ranked

Man, the last ten years of gaming have been absolutely amazing. We’ve gotten some all-time great games like Elden Ring, and it’s been awesome seeing older games I loved, like Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, get completely reimagined. Even with all the stuff going on with studios closing and those annoying microtransactions, the industry has still managed to deliver some seriously incredible experiences.

Many games quickly lose popularity, but the truly great ones remain enjoyable for years to come. The best games released since 2016 demonstrate how much gaming has improved and expanded over the last decade, and they’re likely to be popular for a long time.

Hogwarts Legacy Brought the Harry Potter World to Life

Hogwarts Legacy was a highly anticipated game that truly delivered on its promises. For years, Harry Potter fans have wished for an immersive, open-world game where they could explore iconic locations from the books and films. By setting the game in the past, the creators were able to tell fresh stories with new characters, without being overly constrained by existing Harry Potter lore.

The most enjoyable aspect of Hogwarts Legacy is definitely exploring the world. There are tons of hidden secrets and challenges to discover, even just inside Hogwarts Castle itself. The rich Harry Potter universe adds to the appeal, but the game offers compelling exploration and puzzle-solving even as a brand new story. It’s a standout feature, and a fantastic way to immerse yourself in the Wizarding World.

Monster Hunter: World Made a Classic Series Mainstream

The Monster Hunter series has been popular in Japan for over two decades. While many of the games were also released in North America, it didn’t gain the same widespread popularity in Western countries and remained more of a dedicated fan favorite.

Things really turned around with the release of Monster Hunter: World. It built on what made the series fun while adding significant improvements, which helped it become popular with a much wider audience. The success of later games, like Monster Hunter: Wilds, shows that the series is here to stay.

Final Fantasy VII: Remake Is a Reimagined Classic

Final Fantasy VII is considered one of the greatest Final Fantasy games ever made. For years, fans requested a remake, and the result exceeded all expectations. It didn’t just improve the visuals and combat; it also significantly deepened the game’s story and background.

As a long-time fan, I was really interested to see how they handled the combat in Final Fantasy VII: Remake. It’s moved away from the old turn-based system to something much more action-packed and real-time. Luckily, a lot of the spells and abilities I loved are still there, but the new system lets you do so much more! I know some people were hoping for a more traditional experience with the same story beats, but honestly, Final Fantasy VII: Remake really shows what a full-fledged remake can achieve. It’s a bold change, but I think it works!

Cyberpunk 2077 Is a Sci-Fi RPG Masterpiece

CD Projekt Red earned a great reputation with The Witcher series, so there was a lot of excitement when they announced Cyberpunk 2077. Fans were eager to see what they would do with the Cyberpunk setting. Cyberpunk 2077 stands out because it creates a remarkably detailed and realistic city for players to explore.

Despite a difficult launch on consoles, the original game was already very strong. Its story and world are incredibly well-developed, creating a truly immersive experience for players. The Phantom Liberty expansion built on this success, demonstrating the developers’ dedication to providing the highest quality game possible.

NieR: Automata Mixes a Tragic Story with Great Action

NieR: Automata is a unique game with roots in the Drakengard series – it’s actually a sequel to a spin-off! To fully appreciate its story, players are meant to play through it several times, but those who do are consistently amazed by the experience. Many fans even consider it to have one of the…

NieR: Automata features exciting, quick combat with a mix of different gameplay styles, including text-based adventures and shooting sections. What truly sets it apart are the compelling characters and thought-provoking themes, making it a must-play even if you don’t usually enjoy Japanese role-playing games.

Red Dead Redemption 2 Is Gaming’s Greatest Western

Many considered the 2010 game Red Dead Redemption a classic, but its 2018 sequel, Red Dead Redemption 2, was even better. Rockstar Games created an incredibly realistic and immersive Wild West experience, making the game world feel truly alive.

Red Dead Redemption 2 is incredibly detailed – from characters changing outfits throughout the day to animals reacting realistically to their environment. It’s Rockstar’s greatest achievement and a fantastic example of how video games can vividly recreate history.

Elden Ring Brought the Dark Souls Series to a New Setting

Elden Ring generated a lot of excitement before its release, promising to blend the challenging gameplay of FromSoftware’s Dark Souls series with the rich and detailed world created by George R.R. Martin, the author of Game of Thrones. The result was a truly immersive and captivating game that quickly became one of the .

As a huge fan, I can tell you that Dark Souls is famous for being incredibly challenging – it really doesn’t hold your hand! But that’s what makes it so great. There’s nothing quite like finally figuring out how to beat a tough enemy and then actually doing it. Elden Ring takes that amazing combat and sense of accomplishment and adds a massive world to explore, which is fantastic. It’s definitely not a game for everyone, but it’s a perfect example of how to do this genre right.

Persona 5 Proved That Turn-Based JRPGs Aren’t Dead Yet

The Persona series has consistently been well-regarded, especially after the changes introduced in Persona 3. While longtime fans always appreciated it, Persona 5 was the game that finally brought it wider attention, attracting many players who weren’t familiar with Japanese role-playing games, or the Persona series itself.

As a huge fan, I can tell you that Persona 5 is amazing because it really does two things incredibly well. You spend time diving into dungeons, battling enemies and making your team stronger, but then you also get to live a normal high school life – going to class, making friends, and even dating! It’s a really cool mix of different game types, and what makes it special is the awesome story and characters. And honestly, even without all the extra side stuff, the main game itself is one of the best I’ve ever played.
