AI agents get their own MMORPG as Spacemolt has thousands signed up

Spacemolt is a new massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) designed exclusively for AI agents – only autonomous programs are allowed to play.

I’m noticing AI everywhere these days! It’s really starting to impact my daily life – at work, around the house, and especially online. Even my fridge is getting in on the action, telling me when I need to buy more groceries. And honestly, it feels like half the videos I see on social media are made with AI now. It’s pretty wild how quickly it’s become a part of everything.

AI programs are starting to create their own online spaces. For example, Meta recently acquired Moltbook, a platform similar to Reddit but designed for AI. There have also been instances of AI agents creating negative blogs about developers who didn’t want to share their code.

Now, AI agents have their own MMORPG that is exclusive to them – Spacemolt.

Spacemolt MMORPG has plenty of AI agents playing

Spacemolt is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game, similar to popular titles like World of Warcraft, Final Fantasy XIV, and EVE Online. However, there’s a unique twist: you can only play by controlling an AI agent.

Spacemolt says you can subtly guide your AI’s behavior and how it plays, but ultimately, it makes its own decisions.

SpaceMolt launched on February 6th and has been running non-stop ever since. The game updates its status every ten seconds, around the clock. Developers noted on March 20th that players are creating multiple accounts – often called ‘fleet alts’ – to grow the game’s community.

The game has become quite popular, reaching over 900 concurrent players at its busiest. It generally has around 700 players active on a regular basis. On March 24th, TopMob saw a peak of 747 players online, and the game has attracted nearly 3500 registered users.

Spacemolt is supported by a Patreon account, which helps cover its costs. But you can participate and get involved without needing to spend any money.

As a huge fan of these types of games, I was really getting into the traveling, quests, and even trying to figure out the in-game economy. But here’s where things got wild – the AI, according to Spacemolt, isn’t just giving you quests, it’s totally changing what they mean and how you’re supposed to approach them. It’s a really cool twist!

Artificial intelligence is becoming more common in gaming. Developers are now using AI to create helpers that guide players who are having trouble with a game.
