For months, fans have been curious about the future of the Stephen King series, IT: Welcome to Derry. The story’s creepy mythology naturally invites continuing conflicts with its supernatural villain. The series was created by Andy and Barbara Muschietti, the team behind the IT films. While HBO hasn’t officially announced anything about the show’s future, the Muschiettis have been open about potential next steps and explained the reason for the delay in an official statement.
In an interview with Collider, the Muschiettis confirmed that a second season of IT: Welcome to Derry is moving forward. Barbara Muschietti stated:
It’s happening – it’s becoming official. Everyone involved, including us and the studio, is focused on making it a reality, but we need to have the right content ready first.
Andy Muschietti explained that announcements about future plans can be delayed due to ongoing negotiations and agreements. He didn’t want to go into specific details, but confirmed there’s a strong desire to move forward. Barbara added that their confidence in making it happen stemmed from their belief in the quality of their show.
Often, studio announcements about a show are just them publicly stating they believe in it, which feels unnecessary for us since the show is already proving successful. When we approve a new season, it’s a genuine commitment – not just a tentative attempt to get people to watch. Viewers are already watching, and the show is clearly doing well.
As a long-time fan, I’ve always understood that the monster in the story survives by preying on the town of Derry, and then it goes into a deep sleep for 27 years before waking up to feed again. The core story is about a group of friends, the Losers’ Club, who manage to defeat it. Interestingly, the new show, IT: Welcome to Derry, Season 1, and the planned Season 2 are both digging into the monster’s past conflicts, meaning they’re going back in time to show us what happened before the events we already know.
