PlayStation Network Officially Ending in 2026

PlayStation owners, a big change is coming! Sony is phasing out the PlayStation Network name and branding this year.

According to Insider Gaming, PlayStation recently informed its employees about an upcoming visual update in an email that was later shared publicly. This change won’t affect how PlayStation services work – features like friends lists, online gaming, and trophies will continue to function normally. The update is expected to be finished by September.

PlayStation Network Will Be Phased Out by September

Sony is updating its branding and will stop using the terms ‘PlayStation Network’ and ‘PSN’. This change is happening to better reflect the wide range of their online services. Don’t worry, this is just a visual update – there won’t be any changes to how their services actually work. They plan to fully switch over to the new branding by September 2026.

Players are already seeing changes as Sony moves away from the ‘PlayStation Network’ name. Screenshots online show the ‘PSN’ branding being replaced with just ‘PlayStation,’ and Sony has updated its website and terms of service to reflect this change. Reactions from online communities have been varied, with some players expressing mixed feelings about the rebranding.

Gamers React to Sony Dropping the ‘Network’ From PSN

“Thanks Sony, but I’m gonna keep calling it PSN,” one person stated.

Someone pointed out that outside of PlayStation’s marketing team, most people rarely say ‘PlayStation Network.’ They explained that companies generally avoid branding things as a ‘network’ these days, because it simply refers to the internet. Nintendo made a similar change when they stopped using ‘Nintendo Network’ and ‘Nintendo Wi-Fi’ in their branding.

One Reddit user suggested Sony should have followed HBO’s example and simply called the service “Network,” rather than changing its name and then back to HBO Max.

I saw a comment that said someone paid a whopping $200 million for this new branding – it’s crazy to think about that much money going into a rebrand!

I’ve been a PlayStation fan since the beginning, and the PlayStation Network – or PSN – has always been a huge part of the experience. It launched way back in 2006 and let us play games online for free, plus it had the PlayStation Store where you could download games digitally. Then, in 2010, Sony introduced PlayStation Plus, which gave us free monthly games and some good discounts. Over time, PlayStation Plus became necessary if you wanted to play online with others, and recently, in 2022, they changed it up again with different tiers – Essential, Extra, and Premium – offering even more benefits.

Even without the recent changes to its brand, PlayStation continues to be the top-selling console each month in 2026. The PlayStation 5 currently holds 72.5% of the market, while Xbox has 27%, solidifying Sony’s leading position. To date, around 90 million PS5 consoles have been sold, significantly more than the approximately 34 million Xbox Series X/S consoles.
