A woman claims she didn’t get a real estate job because her car was considered too old. She says the company rejected her application based on the age of her vehicle.
Alanah Thompson French, 18, claims she wasn’t hired because of the car she drives – a 2014 Citroen C1 with under 40,000 miles.
Applicant told vehicle failed company requirement
Thompson French explained to the BBC that the problem happened when applicants were asked to verify their car was no more than 10 years old as part of the application process.
Her application was denied because she answered “no” to a question, and Thompson French was told why.
She said the rejection felt like a real blow, and wondered how young people are supposed to manage the costs of getting to work – like buying a car – when they’re just starting their careers.
Thompson French said her car had no mechanical issues preventing it from being usable for work. So, I just picked up a car for about £2,800 – roughly $3,700. It only had under 40,000 miles on it and, thankfully, no known problems with the engine or anything. I was asking the seller why it was so cheap, and they said their company needs everyone to have dependable cars for work safety, so they were basically selling it at cost. Makes sense, I guess!
The realtor stated that employee safety is a top priority, and they need dependable transportation, especially for those who drive long distances or work independently.
In the UK, cars need to pass a yearly test called the MOT to prove they’re safe to drive and meet the legal requirements for road use.
