You can now preorder the movie *One Battle After Another* on 4K Blu-ray at Walmart before it hits theaters this Friday. They briefly offered a limited edition Steelbook for preorder, but it appears to be sold out or no longer available, possibly because preorders weren’t supposed to begin until today. The Steelbook was originally priced at $44.25, while the standard 4K Blu-ray is still available for $37.
Amazon hasn’t started taking preorders yet, but we’ll let you know as soon as the Limited Edition Steelbook is available to buy on their site.
Paul Thomas Anderson’s new film, *One Battle After Another*, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Sean Penn, and Regina Hall, is already generating Oscar buzz. The 162-minute action thriller, which blends intense moments with dark humor, currently boasts a 98% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. DiCaprio plays Bob Ferguson, a troubled former revolutionary battling paranoia and addiction, who must save his daughter, Willa (Chase Infiniti), from his longtime enemy, Colonel Steven J. Lockjaw (Sean Penn).
I’m a big fan of Thomas Pynchon, and I was really excited to hear about *One Battle After Another* because it’s loosely based on his novel *Vineland*. It doesn’t follow the book exactly – it’s more like the creators took the general idea and some key events as a starting point. This reminds me of the movie *Inherent Vice*, which also came from a Pynchon novel. That movie felt a bit more like a straight adaptation, while *One Battle After Another* feels more free-form. It’s a shame *Inherent Vice* isn’t available in 4K, but at least you can find it on Blu-ray for a good price. Pynchon is famously private, so I don’t expect we’ll ever get to hear what *he* thinks of this new take on his work!
It’s a fantastic time to be a Thomas Pynchon fan! In addition to a new Paul Thomas Anderson film inspired by Pynchon’s novel *Vineland*, a new Pynchon novel is on its way. *Shadow Ticket*, his first book since 2013’s *Bleeding Edge* (which is considered his most accessible work), will be released on October 7th.
Here’s a list of Paul Thomas Anderson’s films available on Blu-ray and 4K, where available. If you’re interested in the books that inspired *One Battle After Another* and *Inherent Vice*, see the following list of Thomas Pynchon novels. Both lists are arranged from earliest to latest.
