Though he’s best known for playing the funny, self-aware Deadpool, Ryan Reynolds has a history with more serious roles. Fans are discovering this now, as one of his older, more dramatic films – made before he became famous for playing Deadpool – is currently gaining popularity on streaming platforms.
Ryan Reynolds is famous for his witty and dry humor, both in his movies and in real life. But he takes on a very different kind of role in the 2014 film The Captive, playing a father whose daughter disappears. Directed by Atom Egoyan and co-written by Reynolds with David Fraser, the movie also features a strong supporting cast including Bruce Greenwood, Scott Speedman, Rosario Dawson, Mireille Enos, Kevin Durand, and Alexia Fast. Viewers are clearly interested in seeing Reynolds in a more serious role, as The Captive is currently a top 10 hit on Netflix in the U.S.
Alongside Netflix hits like the Oscar-winning KPop Demon Hunters, the newest Jurassic World film, Jurassic World Rebirth, Russell Crowe’s thriller Nuremberg, and the popular sci-fi action movie War Machine starring Alan Ritchson (known from Reacher), comes The Captive. Here’s a look at what the movie is about…
Eight years after Cassandra vanished, new clues suggest she might still be alive. The police, her family, and even Cassandra herself are now working to uncover what happened to her.
Ryan Reynolds Is “Quietly Heartbreaking” in ‘The Captive’
While known for his comedic role as Deadpool, Ryan Reynolds has demonstrated his dramatic range in films like Woman in Gold, The Nines, Life, and Buried. His performance as a mourning father in The Captive is perhaps his most significant departure from the lighthearted Marvel character.
Ryan Reynolds’ performance in “The Captive” received significant acclaim when the film competed for the Palme d’Or at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival. Scout Tafoya of RogerEbert.com called it a beautifully complex thriller, highlighting Reynolds’ subtly moving performance, while Margaret Pomeranz of At the Movies praised Reynolds as “solid” and noted the film’s striking visuals.
Despite the actor’s strong performance, the film The Captive received largely negative reviews. Critics gave it a 28% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, while audiences scored it at 33%. Critics found the movie overly depressing, even for its sad subject matter. Many viewers compared it unfavorably to the film Prisoners, saying it wasn’t as well-made.
Deadpool Is Coming Back Again & Again

Twentieth Century Fox
Okay, so Ryan Reynolds has definitely proven he’s more than just a funny guy! He’s gotten some great serious roles, but let’s be real, he is Deadpool. And it’s amazing! I just heard he’s going to be in the new Avengers: Doomsday movie, and on top of that, they’re already planning Deadpool 4 after Deadpool & Wolverine smashed the billion-dollar mark. It’s incredible how much success he’s having with this character!
