Okay, so I was totally blown away by 1883. Seriously, even with limited screen time, Billy Bob Thornton as that lawman just stole every scene he was in. I’m still hoping they give that character his own spin-off show! 1883 is, in my opinion, the strongest of all the Yellowstone prequels – it really showed you the tough, brutal trip John Dutton’s family took to get to the land that eventually became the Yellowstone Ranch. It was fantastic.
Billy Bob Thornton made a guest appearance on 1883 as a personal favor to Taylor Sheridan, who initially intended to cast an unknown actor in the role of Marshal Courtright. They worked together so well that Sheridan then wrote the series Landman specifically for Thornton to star in. Considering how many Yellowstone spin-offs there are now, it would be great to see a story that further explored Thornton’s character, Courtright.
Billy Bob Thornton’s 1883 Cameo Stole The Whole Show
The ten-part series 1883 follows the Dutton family as they travel west with a wagon train, facing dangers from both the unforgiving terrain and the people they meet along the way. In the second episode, titled “Behind Us, A Cliff,” wagon train leader Shea (played by Sam Elliott) travels to Fort Worth to track down the group responsible for attacking their caravan.
Shea enlists the help of Marshal Courtright, who leads them to the town saloon. The gang is quickly identified, and Courtright immediately shoots and kills most of them. Thornton manages to steal the gold within four minutes, making a brief but memorable appearance that is both fascinating and frightening.
Everyone in the saloon – and likely viewers at home – was shocked by what Courtright did. He famously declared, “I’m the only killer in Fort Worth!” The actor playing Thornton delivered a particularly captivating performance with his cool and collected attitude, making it disappointing that his character only appeared briefly in the episode.
Billy Bob Thornton’s Marshal Courtright Could Have Fronted A Solo Series
Seeing James Thornton’s portrayal of Jim Courtright sparked my interest in the real man. Jim Courtright was a famous and intimidating figure in the Old West – he was both a law officer and, at times, operated outside the law. He served in the Union Army during the Civil War before becoming a Marshal in Fort Worth.
The show 1883 portrays Courtright as a man who often delivered justice using a gun. Interestingly, crime rates actually decreased significantly while he was in charge. It’s worth noting that the actor who played Courtright, Thornton, was much older than the character – in his late 60s, while Courtright would have been in his late 30s at the time.
While in charge of Fort Worth, Courtright was accused of several murders and of demanding money from businesses for protection. He was eventually removed from office and spent the next few years working as a gunman or ranch hand. In 1887, he was killed in a shootout with the famous gunfighter, Luke Short.
Overall, Courtright’s life was incredibly complex and dramatic – it feels like a story perfectly suited for a show created by Taylor Sheridan. I think it would be great to see Billy Bob Thornton return to his role from 1883 in a limited series similar to Bass Reeves. However, since he’s currently working on Landman, that probably won’t happen anytime soon.
