If you were hoping to see Conan O’Brien hilariously dressed as Amy Madigan’s character from Weapons or wanted to see him finally get the grand Oscars welcome he deserves, this year’s opening was perfect. Returning as host after his widely praised 2025 performance, O’Brien began the Academy Awards with a funny sketch. Dressed in the Weapons costume, he ran from a group of kids while traveling through the worlds of this year’s Best Picture nominees. Though the cast of Sinners initially refused him entry to their set despite his heartfelt performance of “Danny Boy,” the audience eventually welcomed him onto the Oscars stage. He then delivered witty and pointed jokes about the nominees, acknowledging the tense political climate. He started by joking, “Last year, when I hosted, Los Angeles was on fire, but this year, everything’s going great.” He followed up by saying security was tight, but not because of political issues. “I’m told there are concerns about attacks from both the opera and ballet communities,” he quipped.
O’Brien kept the audience roaring with jokes, particularly about a hypothetical Oscars hosted by Kid Rock at a Dave & Busters, the limited number of British nominees, and Netflix’s Ted Sarandos. He playfully suggested the Oscars was Sarandos’s first time seeing a movie in a theater, then imagined Sarandos thinking, “Why are they all having fun together? They should be watching at home so I can make money off of it!” Despite all the playful jabs, O’Brien ended on a genuinely optimistic note, celebrating the Oscars’ international spirit as a source of hope in a difficult world.

Typical of Conan O’Brien, what seemed like a genuine moment quickly turned into a playful joke. He started praising award winners for their graciousness, saying they always share the credit with others and display admirable humility. He then jokingly admitted he wasn’t sure he could do the same. As if on cue, announcer Matt Berry presented O’Brien with a mock Oscar. O’Brien seized the moment, accepting the award with over-the-top arrogance while dressed in a king’s robe, accompanied by trumpeters and a hilariously boastful song performed by Josh Groban, which celebrated O’Brien’s greatness and lack of gratitude.
People often criticize those at the top, but this polished monologue truly showcased O’Brien’s comedic talent, leaving little room for complaint.
