Despite being known as family entertainment, Star Wars often features surprisingly grim and violent storylines. Nearly every film includes a large-scale loss of life, whether it’s the destruction of a Death Star or a dramatic sacrifice like the Holdo Maneuver. Surprisingly, the animated Star Wars series actually showcase some of the most intense and brutal moments in the entire saga.
Both Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels contain surprisingly intense and often shocking moments, ranging from characters losing their heads – even young Ahsoka – to the complete annihilation of entire worlds. Both series don’t shy away from depicting death and widespread destruction.
Most of the large-scale deaths in Star Wars are caused by villains, or at least characters who claim to be fighting for good. But there’s a rebel droid who stands out – he has an unexpectedly high number of kills, and actually enjoys taking them out.
Chopper Just Likes To Kill
As a lifelong Star Wars fan, I’ve always appreciated the droids, but Chopper from Rebels is something else. Sure, R2-D2 has taken out a droid or two and indirectly helped defeat Stormtroopers, but Chopper? He’s a killing machine! And what’s really wild is that he starts right away – I mean, within the first couple of episodes of Rebels, he’s already taking lives, and he seems almost… cheerful about it. It’s a surprisingly dark, but fascinating, side to the Star Wars universe.
The droid truly reveals how dangerous it is in the second season episode, “Stealth Strike.” That’s when its chaotic side really comes out.
In this episode, the crew of the Ghost infiltrates an Imperial cruiser to rescue Ezra Bridger and Commander Sato. While they quickly locate Ezra, finding Sato proves more difficult. Meanwhile, Chopper and Ezra work to disable the ship’s powerful gravity well projectors by sabotaging the reactor.
Chopper prefers the complicated route, so instead of simply disabling the gravity well projectors, he maxes them out. And, true to form, he keeps this to himself – he’s a rather secretive droid.
As the rebel ships try to jump into hyperspace, the Imperial Interdictor activates its gravity well projectors, preventing any escape. However, due to Chopper’s modifications, the gravity wells are malfunctioning and pulling in all ships – including the Imperial fleet itself.
In a flash, an Imperial Interdictor was destroyed when it was caught between two Arquitens-class command cruisers, with all three ships collapsing. Chopper was responsible for the destruction, and it resulted in the deaths of over 50,000 Imperial soldiers.
Chopper Would Kill More If He Could
Chopper tolerates the rest of the Ghost crew, but he genuinely cares for Hera and her son, Jacen, as shown in Ahsoka. He wouldn’t be upset if anything happened to the others – he even attempted to harm Ezra on several occasions. In the episode “The Future of the Force,” he went so far as to suggest killing a Force-sensitive baby to prevent the Empire from turning them into an Inquisitor.
Chopper enjoys destroying other droids and will attack them whenever he gets the chance, even if they pose no danger or aren’t affiliated with the Empire. He immediately attacked R2-D2 upon meeting him – simply because that’s Chopper’s personality! And fans adore him for being so unpredictable and destructive.
