Everyone in the UK is getting a glimpse of ‘Project Hail Mary’ right now, and here’s a breakdown of how it ends. Be warned: major spoilers follow!

Project Hail Mary succeeds (kind-of)

Grace is on a critical mission to prevent ‘Astrophage’ from consuming the sun. If she fails, Earth will experience a devastating and catastrophic cooling over the next three decades.

While orbiting Earth, astronaut Grace unexpectedly meets an alien she calls Rocky. Rocky reveals that his home planet, Eridani, is facing the same crisis as Earth.

The unlikely pair work together and ultimately discover a solution called ‘Taumoeba’ – a substance that hunts and controls the Astrophage.

They learn how to create more of it, share a heartfelt goodbye, and then each travel to their own planet to become heroes.

On his way back, Grave finds some terrible news: the Taumoeba is probably consuming Rocky’s fuel, which will eventually kill him and everyone on Eridani.

Grace makes the ultimate sacrifice

Grace now faces a difficult choice: should he keep traveling, or go to Rocky, which would mean he’d never return home?

Once a self-centered and reluctant participant in the Hail Mary project, Grace transforms into a true hero. He bravely transmits his crucial discoveries back to Earth, hoping to save the planet, and then uses the ship’s remaining fuel to help his alien companion.

Ryland and Rocky find their way back to each other, and the story concludes with Ryland making his home on Rocky’s planet. The Eridians have created a special Earth-like environment, complete with a beach Grace would adore, just for him.

Rocky assured Ryland they were figuring out how to send him home, and Rocky was pleased to hear Grace wasn’t convinced Ryland was eager to leave just yet.

The movie concludes with Dr. Grace teaching a class again, but this time his students are aliens – and they’re far more enthusiastic and attentive than any of his human students ever were. He finishes the film with a genuine smile, appearing happier than he has throughout the entire story.
