Star Trek: Starfleet Academy EP Confirms Season 2’s Major Risk

The first season of the show recently finished airing on Paramount+, and a second season is already being planned. While it’s not certain if the show will continue beyond Season 2, the people making it are optimistic about getting it renewed.

I was reading an interview with Noga Landau, one of the executive producers of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, and she talked a bit about what we can expect in Season 2. She didn’t give away too much, but she did say the season will end on a cliffhanger. Honestly, that’s a little worrying because it means if the show doesn’t get renewed after that, things will feel really incomplete. Season 1 had a pretty satisfying ending, so it would be a shame if Season 2 just left us hanging with no resolution!

Season 2 Will End With a Cliffhanger

Landau described the Season 2 finale as a cliffhanger, explaining that the writers followed the natural progression of the story. They crafted the ending in a way that felt authentic, and he expressed hope for the show, Starfleet Academy, to continue for many seasons.

While the specific storyline for Season 2 remains under wraps, showrunner Landau shared a few details. Unlike Season 1, there won’t be a single main villain. Instead, the season will focus on a complex, overarching problem facing Starfleet. Landau also promised more episodes centered around individual characters, allowing them to take center stage and develop further.

According to Landau, Season 2 builds on the strengths of Season 1, particularly by focusing even more on character development and complex moral dilemmas within the Starfleet Academy setting. They enjoyed making episodes like ‘104,’ which focused on Klingons and Jay-Den’s experiences, and decided to create more episodes of that type in Season 2.

An Early Renewal for Season 3 Isn’t as Likely

As a huge Star Trek fan, I was really excited when I heard Starfleet Academy was getting a second season – Paramount+ renewed it way before the first one even aired! It seemed like they had a lot of faith in the show. Unfortunately, it hasn’t quite hit the mark, and it hasn’t been performing well on the streaming platform. It’s also really split audiences; critics gave it a pretty good score of 88%, but regular viewers on Rotten Tomatoes only gave it a 42% rating, which is a big difference!

To ensure a complete story, Starfleet Academy needs more viewers for its second season. Star Trek shows are costly to make, and it’s unlikely the series will be renewed early again. If viewership drops further, the show could be cancelled, but a stronger season could secure its future. Despite the uncertainty, the producers seem optimistic about a potential third season.
