The planned reboot of Buffy the Vampire Slayer has been canceled by Hulu, and Sarah Michelle Gellar has addressed the news. While promoting Ready or Not 2, Gellar shared the disappointing update with fans, explaining that Hulu decided not to proceed with Buffy: New Sunnydale. She expressed her sadness at the cancellation, wanting fans to hear the news directly from her. And, naturally, some fans are jokingly blaming Xander for the show’s demise.
A reboot of Buffy the Vampire Slayer had been in development for over a year. Director Chloé Zhao, known for her recent film Hamnet, was slated to helm the project, and Nora and Lilla Zuckerman, the writers of Poker Face, were working on the script. For fans of Buffy and those critical of its creator, Joss Whedon, it seemed like the perfect combination. Ryan Kiera, from Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, had even been cast as the new Slayer. Sarah Michelle Gellar, who played the original Buffy, expressed her excitement, saying she’d never imagined returning to the role but was reminded of how much she loves the character and its significance to fans. She emphasized that the reboot wouldn’t diminish her own connection to Buffy.
