Critically acclaimed horror film It Follows has been eagerly awaiting a sequel for more than ten years. Now, after a long wait, filming for the next installment is expected to begin soon.
A sequel to the horror film It Follows, called They Follow, was announced in 2023. Fans began to wonder if the project had been cancelled due to a lack of news. However, Maika Monroe, who starred in the original It Follows, recently shared at the South by Southwest (SXSW) festival that filming is now planned to start in the summer of 2026.
They Follow Will Finally Start Filming This Year
Monroe, while promoting her new film Reminders of Him, shared that she’s filming a sequel to her early movie, It Follows, this summer. She explained that revisiting the character after ten years has been a significant experience, personally changing her life and offering a compelling continuation of the story.
I recently spoke with Marilyn Monroe about the upcoming sequel, and she offered a fascinatingly coy response when I asked if it lived up to her expectations. She didn’t exactly say it didn’t meet them, but she hinted at something unexpected. She simply said, with a curious smile, that she thinks it will really surprise audiences.
Last autumn, she admitted she didn’t know when filming for the sequel would begin, explaining that coordinating everyone’s schedules was the main challenge in getting the movie made.
We have everything we need to make it happen, it’s just been difficult to find the time. David Mitchell, the director, was working on a large studio film, and I’ve also been very busy. But things are looking promising, and I’m hopeful we can get it done soon. I think audiences will really enjoy it.
Maika Monroe Returns as Jay in They Follow
With the announcement of They Follow, it was confirmed that Monroe would reprise their role and David Robert Mitchell would return as director. Since then, details about the story have been kept under wraps, but Monroe hints it will likely surprise audiences. No additional cast members have been announced, and a release date is still to come.
The movie It Follows centers around Jay Height, played by Monroe, who finds her life turned upside down after a seemingly normal date. Following a sexual encounter, she’s afflicted with a terrifying curse: a relentless, unseen entity that stalks her constantly. Only the cursed person can see this entity, which appears as different people, and if it catches them, they face a violent death. Jay can temporarily delay the curse by passing it on to someone else through sexual contact, but if that new person dies, the curse returns to her.
The horror film It Follows quickly became a modern classic thanks to its original idea and excellent acting. Critics loved it – it earned a 95% rating on Rotten Tomatoes – and it gained a dedicated fanbase. The film was also a financial success, making over $23 million despite being made with a budget of only $1 million. It’s a must-see for horror fans.
