As a viewer, I’ve noticed The Madison feels different from Taylor Sheridan’s other shows; it’s more quiet and focused on personal stories. But even after three episodes, I’m left with a lot of questions. It’s not a direct spin-off of Yellowstone, but it definitely has that same Sheridan feel. The Montana scenery, the tension between people from different backgrounds, and the complicated family relationships – it all feels really familiar, which I appreciate.

Early reviews show Sheridan delivering another strong performance with The Madison. The show centers around a family grappling with loss, conflict, and emotional turmoil. As Stacy Clyburn and her daughters deal with the death of Preston, they face new difficulties. Even after the first three episodes, some mysteries remain.

Stacy’s Plan To Give Her Daughters Tough Love Is Working

The third episode of The Madison concluded with a scene revealing a past conversation between Stacy and Preston about Abby’s divorce. They debated whether to help Abby or let her learn from the experience on her own. Following this, Stacy privately acknowledged that Preston was mistaken, and it’s now evident she’s enacting the firm but loving approach she wished she’d taken years ago. It appears her strategy is proving successful.

Since moving to Montana, Stacy has been stricter with her daughters, and it’s already making a difference. The episode started with a big fight between Paige and Abby that ended with injuries, but they managed to make up by the end, even sharing secrets about Abby’s new interest in Van. Abby is starting to date again, and Paige is showing more consideration towards her nieces.

Stacy’s strict but caring approach is surprisingly effective, even with her granddaughters. At the beginning of the season, Bridgett and Macy were difficult children glued to their phones and focused on appearing socially conscious. But by the end of episode 3, titled The Madison, they were happily working on a puzzle together and even agreed to try the tacos they’d initially disliked – though they still didn’t want to call them by that name.

Throughout the ongoing events at The Madison, Stacy will likely continue to push the family hard. Her strict approach seems to be working, and hopefully Abby, Paige, Russell, and the grandchildren will keep growing and improving while facing the challenges of life in Montana. However, it’s uncertain if these changes will last once the family returns to New York after Preston’s funeral. They might need to stay in Montana longer to continue their personal growth.

Abby’s New Relationship With Van Could Keep Her In Montana

Okay, so in episode 3 of The Madison, the biggest thing that happened, for me anyway, was with Abby. She had a really rough fight with her mom and ended up stuck on the side of the road. Luckily, this super cute police officer named Van showed up and gave her a ride! They ended up spending the night together at Cade’s farm, getting to know each other, and honestly, the chemistry was amazing. It all ended with a kiss and they even exchanged numbers, so I’m definitely hoping to see more of them together!

Abby’s connection with Van could lead to big changes in her life. She’s already acknowledged she’s not fully satisfied with her life in New York, and Stacy has been encouraging her to make a fresh start. It’s becoming obvious Abby is developing romantic feelings for Van, and a relationship with him might give her the push she needs to move to Montana with her mother and begin a new chapter.

Moving to Montana would be a good fit for Abby’s daughters, too. Van and Cade both have children, meaning Bridgett and Macy would have a ready-made group of friends their age. The girls are already getting used to a quieter, more country life, and with their father no longer receiving financial support from Stacy, there’s not much keeping Abby and her family in New York. Montana offers a lot of positive opportunities for them.

Paige, Russell, & The Kids Are Adjusting To Montana Life

Stacy’s daughter, Paige (played by Elle Chapman), and her husband, Russell (Patrick J. Adams), have both changed a lot in the first part of The Madison. When they first arrived in Montana, they were clearly out of their element, used to city life and unprepared for a rural environment. They argued frequently, and Paige tended to take the lead in their relationship, sometimes to the point of being overbearing.

Despite being stung by hornets and going for a swim, Paige and Russell are feeling much improved. They already seem to have a warmer connection, with Paige telling Russell she forgives him for not mentioning the hornets. Paige has also begun to treat her nieces with more respect, even scolding them for using bad language after she herself had sworn earlier in the day.

As a critic, I have to say, it’s wonderful to see the Clyburns really blossoming in Montana! Just a few days in, and they’re already a much tighter family. Remember that awkward dinner in the first episode, where everyone was lost in their phones? The contrast in the latest episode was striking – everyone except Stacy was practically falling over laughing about Abby’s kiss with Van! It’s clear this change of scenery is doing them good. The big question now is, how long will they stick around out West?

Stacy Found A Gun In Paul’s Truck That Could Come Into Play Later

The most shocking part of episode 3 of The Madison happened when Stacy found a gun in Paul’s truck. She’d gone to the Sheriff’s office to pick it up, and discovered a large revolver in the center console. After Abby got out of the car, Stacy looked at the gun again, and Cade (Kevin Zegers) approached her to talk about suicide.

Okay, so things got really heavy. Cade shared that suicide runs in his family, and he described it as something that can spread and a really dangerous way to deal with short-term issues. Stacy insisted she wasn’t actively thinking about it at that moment, but Cade still took the gun from her – a big revolver, which he joked was more suited for bear defense! Now, he’s got the gun, but honestly, I have a feeling it’s going to play a major role in the final three episodes of The Madison. It just feels like a ticking time bomb right now.

Taylor Sheridan probably didn’t include Paul’s gun just for a brief talk about suicide, suggesting it will play a bigger role later. There are two main possibilities: either Stacy was seriously contemplating suicide, and the gun will be significant as she deals with her grief, or someone in the family will face a dangerous situation – like a bear attack – and need it for protection.

Bears have been brought up a couple of times in The Madison. Paige and Russell talked about them and bear spray, and Cade mentioned an encounter while discussing a gun. Considering how much time the Clyburns are spending outdoors, it’s likely someone will cross paths with a bear before the season ends. If they do, it’s uncertain whether they’ll still be able to use Paul’s gun, as seen in The Madison.
