Readers were captivated by the main character’s intelligence, humor, and physical power, all delivered in Child’s fast-paced, straightforward writing style.

Even though the Jack Reacher books are very popular, it took around 15 years to finally get a movie made. While there was some debate about Tom Cruise being cast as Reacher, the first film was successful and helped the character gain even more fans. Author Lee Child was pleased with the movie, and he also enjoys the Reacher series on Prime Video starring Alan Ritchson.

Lee Child Felt Jack Reacher: Never Go Back Was Too “Glossy”

Lee Child has only publicly criticized one adaptation of his work: the 2016 film Jack Reacher: Never Go Back. The movie, based on the 18th book in the series, features Reacher working to exonerate Susan Turner, who replaced him in the 110th Special Investigations Unit. The plot also involves Reacher unexpectedly learning he may have a teenage daughter.

Although not the strongest book in the Jack Reacher series, Never Go Back is still a captivating thriller. Unfortunately, the film adaptation starring Tom Cruise simplified the story, resulting in a bland mix of family drama and a generic action plot reminiscent of 24. Even Lee Child, the author, was reportedly disappointed with the movie, as revealed in Reacher: The Stories Behind the Stories.

He thought Jack Reacher: Never Go Back wasn’t as good as the first movie, describing it as smoother but less impactful and lacking a raw edge. Critics generally agreed, finding the film predictable and missing the excitement needed to truly engage viewers.

Child Disliked How Jack Reacher 2 Broke This Book Rule

In Reacher: The Stories Behind the Stories, Lee Child discusses each of his Jack Reacher novels, including his 24th book, Blue Moon. He reveals that he often set himself creative challenges while writing, such as his decision to have Reacher avoid killing anyone in Never Go Back.

Reacher’s careful behavior in the novel stems from his desire to make a good impression on Turner. Author Lee Child notes that even dedicated readers missed this subtle motivation, but he’s pleased Reacher completed an entire adventure without any mishaps. He was, however, frustrated that the Never Go Back film adaptation overlooked this detail.

Although Tom Cruise’s version of Reacher doesn’t engage in widespread violence, he does kill around six people. He notably follows through on his threat to severely injure the main villain, breaking their arms, legs, and neck. The filmmakers may not have realized Reacher’s relatively low kill count, just like many readers, but Lee Child hoped a sequel would stick to the original books’ rule of avoiding lethal force.

Jack Reacher: Never Go Back Killed The Tom Cruise Movies

I remember when Jack Reacher first came out – it felt like they were really trying to build a long-running series with Tom Cruise. But honestly, Never Go Back kind of put a stop to that. It did okay at the box office, making over $162 million globally (according to Box Office Mojo), but that was actually a drop of around $60 million compared to the first movie. And the critics weren’t impressed either – the reviews were pretty lukewarm, which definitely hurt its chances.

A third movie starring Tom Cruise never happened, but the story was successfully brought back to life six years later as the Amazon Prime series Reacher. It seems like a good outcome for everyone, and there’s even a possibility that the plot of Never Go Back could be adapted for the show sometime down the line.
