Zohran Mamdani canceled a scheduled interview with CBS Sunday Morning after Bari Weiss shared a critical video on Twitter. According to Vanity Fair, Mamdani was already unsure about the interview, but Weiss’s retweet was the final push that led to his decision. Vanity Fair reports he was set to speak with Robert Costa but was worried about negative coverage from Weiss’s Free Press. The situation became even more strained following a series of events referred to as “Operation Epic Fury.”
Representative Mamdani released a statement criticizing the recent military action – which former President Trump has referred to as a ‘war,’ ‘incursion,’ or ‘excursion.’ This prompted a strong response from Masih Alinejad, an Iranian-born CBS News contributor who the Justice Department says has been targeted by assassins. During an interview on CBS News, Alinejad challenged Mamdani, asking why he hadn’t spoken out when assassins were sent to New York City. She contrasted his concern for his aunt, who briefly stopped using the subway due to feeling unsafe while wearing a hijab, with her own fear stemming from the assassins sent by the Islamic Republic.
Weiss shared Alinejad’s video with a fire emoji, and sources told Vanity Fair this action effectively ended any chance of Zohran appearing on CBS. A former CBS producer also stated that Weiss and her associates clearly have a bias against Zohran, and this has made it difficult for CBS to find guests willing to participate in interviews.
