In the world of Frieren, most characters are mages, and nearly all of them use a staff. These aren’t just for support while walking – they’re magical tools that help mages cast spells. Each mage’s staff is special and can show something about who they are or how they use magic.
I’ve been absolutely captivated by the mage staffs in Frieren! They’re so thoughtfully designed – some are incredibly detailed with beautiful craftsmanship, while others have a more rustic, almost raw look, like a simple piece of wood accented with metal or crystal. You’ll see staffs made from both wood and metal, and while none of them are overly showy, they definitely vary in elegance. It’s fun to just look at them all and rank them based on how pretty I think they are!
In the anime Frieren, most mages use staffs that are as tall as they are, or even taller. However, Wirbel’s staff is unusual – it’s much shorter, about the size of a forearm. It appears to offer a more secure grip, and the top of the staff is shaped like a spear with three points.
Wirbel’s staff is simple and strong, with very little ornamentation, mirroring his practical nature. As captain of the Northern Magic Corps, he likely chose a smaller, easier-to-carry staff over a larger, more elaborate one that would be difficult to maneuver.
Methode is a mage who uses hypnosis in her magic. Her magical staff in Frieren is more detailed than those of other newer mages. It has a curved top that holds a glowing blue magical core, creating a beautiful shape. The staff itself is a brownish color, giving it an old-fashioned appearance.
I noticed Methode’s staff wasn’t bare – it had some lovely detailing, especially at the top with a magical orb. They used soft metals to decorate it, giving it an elegant look rather than something overly flashy. It really seemed to suit her personality; she always carries herself with a quiet confidence and a lot of class, and the staff felt like an extension of that.
Ubel’s magical staff looks like a black spear with two curved blades near the point. One end is shaped like a lightning bolt and has a black ribbon tied close to the blades. Compared to the staffs of other mages in Frieren, Ubel’s staff has a sharper, more aggressive design, which suits her personality well.
Ubel’s staff in Frieren stands out with its simple, almost stark design – it has very few decorations and is easy to handle, making it a smooth and effective weapon in combat. While it’s not as fancy as some other staffs, its unique look is still very memorable and eye-catching.
I noticed Denken’s mage staff in Frieren has a really old-fashioned look, almost similar in style to Frieren’s own. However, where Frieren’s staff is curved like a crescent moon, Denken’s is much more angular and geometrical, with a dark, detailed rod. The magical energy seems to flow through a red orb, which is held in place by a brass-colored metal frame.
Denken’s mage staff is a traditional design, beautifully detailed with a large gem at the end. Unlike the simpler staffs used by others in Frieren, Denken’s staff has elaborate supports that give it a more polished appearance. This design reflects his personality – calm and commanding, qualities he’s earned through years of experience.
In the anime Frieren, Lawine’s mage staff is quite unique. It’s made of wood and features a large, magical orb at the top. A blue fabric is wrapped around the staff, complementing the dark blue color of the orb which is perfectly set into the wooden top.
Lawine’s staff isn’t overly detailed, but it still feels graceful and magical in Frieren. One end is very slender, making Lawine quick and nimble. Unlike the staffs of other mages, Lawine’s staff has a more gentle and flowing design rather than a sharp, angular look.
Fern isn’t as powerful as Frieren, but she carries a long wooden staff decorated with purple ribbons. This staff is a beloved gift from Heiter that she’s had since childhood, and she can’t bear to lose or replace it. The staff is simple and practical, with very little ornamentation.
I noticed Fern’s staff wasn’t as polished-looking as Frieren’s; it had a bit of a rough, uneven shape. It was made of wood, thicker at one end and tapering to a point at the other. There was some metalwork on it, and a small red gem dangled from a purple ribbon. It really seemed to reflect Fern’s own personality – practical and straightforward, prioritizing usefulness over fancy decoration, but still possessing a simple, understated elegance.
Kanne is a relatively inexperienced mage taking the advanced First-Class Mage exam. In the series Frieren, she’s depicted with a tall, straight staff. This staff has a jewel in the middle and three crystal-like points, and it glows blue whenever she casts a spell.
Kanne’s staff has a distinct, geometrically shaped head with detailed carvings and a gem that channels magic. It features a long, green handle that looks comfortable to grip and control. The staff’s design is elegant and well-proportioned – it’s not overly flashy, but still looks both beautiful and formidable in battle.
Frieren’s staff is red with a gold crescent at the top. It features a central red jewel and additional gold details, along with a red ribbon tied around the crescent. The staff is elegantly designed, with simple, well-proportioned lines and minimal decoration. Its colors and materials give it a classic, slightly aged appearance, fitting for Frieren’s long life as an elf.
Frieren’s staff has an understated elegance that hints at the immense magical skill of its owner. Her calm personality, long white hair, and simple clothes draw attention to the staff’s refined design. It’s not flashy or overly ornate, but a subtly beautiful and well-crafted tool.
