Like another Chris Pratt movie series, The Super Mario Bros. Movie uses a well-known actor to voice Yoshi. The film boasts a star-studded cast, including Chris Pratt as Mario, Charlie Day as Luigi, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, and Jack Black as Bowser.
The sequel will bring back familiar actors, and some new voices will be joining the cast as well. A beloved character from the original game, Yoshi – the cute green dinosaur who often helps Mario – will also appear, hinted at in a short scene after the first movie ended.
The newest Nintendo Direct for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie announced that Donald Glover will voice Yoshi. Although Yoshi doesn’t say a lot, Glover’s involvement is similar to a casting choice made in another popular franchise.
Donald Glover’s Casting As Yoshi Is Similar To Vin Diesel’s Role As Groot In Guardians Of The Galaxy
Donald Glover has joined the voice cast of The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, alongside Brie Larson (as Rosalina), Benny Safdie (as Bowser Jr.), Luis Guzmán (as Wart), and Issa Rae (as Honey Queen). It’s an interesting choice for Glover, as his character, Yoshi, doesn’t say much.
Yoshi in video games is famous for mostly just saying his own name and making sounds. It seems the new movie will handle the character the same way. Like the character Groot in the Guardians of the Galaxy movies, who mostly says “I am Groot,” Yoshi’s speech will be limited to a few phrases.
Vin Diesel voiced Groot, using his signature deep and powerful voice. Even though Groot only says a few words, Diesel made each line feel special with his charming and funny delivery. He was perfectly cast because his voice matched the character so well, and he knew how to make even simple phrases sound unique.
Similar to Vin Diesel, Donald Glover is a popular actor voicing a character with few lines in a franchise led by Chris Pratt. Just as Diesel made Groot memorable despite limited dialogue, Glover has the potential to make his version of Yoshi equally iconic.
Why Glover’s Casting Works
Donald Glover is a highly acclaimed actor and creator. He’s won an Emmy Award for his leading role in the show Atlanta, which he also developed, and was nominated for an Emmy for Mr. & Mrs. Smith. Known for his comedic skills on Community, Glover has also appeared in major films like Solo: A Star Wars Story and the 2019 remake of The Lion King.
Even when Glover only has to say “Yoshi,” he always manages to deliver his lines with a special touch. He’s great at adding feeling or using timing to make it funny. He perfectly captures Yoshi’s cheerful personality and gives the character a voice that’s different from what you hear in the games.
Okay, so initially, Yoshi’s voice in the trailers didn’t immediately scream ‘Donald Glover’ to me. But let’s not forget, the guy is a seriously versatile artist – as Childish Gambino, he’s proven he can sing. That’s why I’m genuinely excited to see what Glover brings to the role; I think he’s got the vocal chops to really make Yoshi a memorable character.
