Buffy the Vampire Slayer Sequel Series: A Template for Supernatural’s Potential Reboot

If Supernatural were to be revived, it could learn a lot from the upcoming Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale sequel. While fans have always wanted a season 16 of Supernatural, the recent trailer for The Boys season 5 – featuring Jensen Ackles, Jared Padalecki, and Misha Collins together again – has significantly increased the demand for the cast to reunite in another Supernatural installment.

As a longtime fan, I’ve been following the whispers about a potential Supernatural revival, and it sounds like the stars, Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki, are finally warming up to the idea. They’ve mentioned wanting to give the show a bit of breathing room – around five years – before revisiting Dean and Sam’s story. Considering the series finale aired back in 2020, and it definitely left some fans wanting more, that waiting period is now over. The demand is high, and it seems like a return could actually happen!

Look, I get it – a Supernatural reboot shouldn’t happen just to cash in on the past. We’ve all seen too many revivals of great shows that just fall flat, feeling like a cheap attempt to make money off nostalgia and ultimately ruining what we loved. But the way the Buffy reboot is shaping up is giving me hope. It feels like they’re doing things the right way, and honestly, it could show us how a potential Supernatural season 16 could actually work and be amazing.

For years after Buffy the Vampire Slayer ended in 2003, fans speculated about a revival. In early 2025, those rumors proved true when Hulu announced a sequel series was being developed. Even better, acclaimed director Chloé Zhao was set to direct, and Sarah Michelle Gellar was in discussions to return as the legendary Buffy Summers.

2025 brought a lot of news about a Buffy reboot, and it was eventually confirmed that Sarah Michelle Gellar would be involved, playing a supporting role as a mentor figure to a new Slayer. This new Slayer is Nova, a quiet high school student, and will be played by Ryan Kiera Armstrong.

In addition to Sarah Michelle Gellar and Alyson Hannigan, several cast members for the new series, New Sunnydale, have been revealed. They’ll be playing a variety of characters, including Nova’s friends, classmates, love interest, teachers, and her dad. Chase Sui Wonders from The Studio will play a vampire named Shirley. Aside from Gellar, no original Buffy actors will be appearing in the new series.

In a January 2026 interview on the Shut Up Evan podcast, Sarah Michelle Gellar discussed the upcoming Buffy the Vampire Slayer sequel. She addressed fan questions about the show’s new title and explained why the original cast won’t be appearing immediately. Gellar stated,

This project feels like a natural extension of the original series, not a complete restart. It’s about exploring where the characters are now and what the world of Sunnydale has become, both with and without Buffy. It won’t immediately pick up with the same characters or feel like a sequel that retreads old ground. The setting of Sunnydale is central to the idea, which is why keeping that name was so important. It’s still Buffy’s world, but it’s evolving into something new.

While some viewers hoping to see familiar faces like Willow, Spike, or even Cordelia might be let down, it’s actually a positive that the new series won’t just be a collection of callbacks to the original. It will forge its own path while still paying respect to what came before, and the show Supernatural could take a similar approach.

Buffy The Vampire Slayer’s Revival Could Be A Template For Supernatural’s Return

Everyone expected Supernatural season 16 to somehow bring Dean and Sam back to life, and the show had done that many times before, so it wouldn’t have been a challenge. The real problem was figuring out what story to tell with them once they were alive again.

Even though the series finale wasn’t loved by everyone, Supernatural still gave us 15 amazing seasons of Dean and Sam fighting demons and other powerful enemies. After such a long run, continuing the show would have likely felt repetitive and uninspired.

Honestly, I think the best way to bring Supernatural back would be to focus on a new generation of hunters. Imagine Dean and Sam mentoring a fresh team, passing the torch instead of being the main heroes again. We’d still get to see Jensen and Jared’s amazing chemistry, but also watch Dean and Sam navigate what comes after hunting, which would be really interesting. It’s a way to keep the spirit of the show alive while exploring new stories!

Letting the brothers take on mentoring roles would give them a chance to find some calm after years of fighting evil, without completely retiring them. Similar to how fans want to see Buffy return without subjecting her to more trauma, we’d love to see the Winchesters continue with their witty back-and-forth, but with fewer life-or-death situations.

If We’re Lucky, Buffy Vs. Superatural Could Happen On TV

Since Buffy ended in 2003 and Supernatural began in 2005, these shows never overlapped in their original runs. However, if new shows related to either series were released around the same time, that could finally happen.

Whether or not this will actually happen is a huge question, particularly since there aren’t any plans for a Supernatural reboot that we know of. Even if a season 16 of Supernatural were to be made, it would take a long time to produce—years, in fact. New Sunnydale, on the other hand, is much further ahead in its development.

Okay, so I just read on Variety that the Buffy reboot, Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale, is officially slated for 2026. That pretty much puts a pin in any hopes of a Supernatural revival happening around the same time, unless they’ve been secretly filming it for ages – and honestly, that seems super unlikely!

Release dates often shift, and there hasn’t been any news about New Sunnydale since the November 2025 report in Variety. If Hulu decides to postpone the Buffy the Vampire Slayer sequel, it could create an opportunity for a sixteenth season of Supernatural to air alongside it. While a crossover between Buffy and Supernatural isn’t likely, it’s still a possibility.
