Be warned – this article contains spoilers for both Outlander season 8, episode 2, and the Outlander books! A moment fans have been waiting for has finally happened in season 8 of Outlander. As the final season of this long-running, beloved show, anticipation has been incredibly high. We’re expecting answers to long-held questions and a dramatic ending. However, I was especially excited to see characters from the ‘Go to the Bees that I Am Gone’ storyline make their first appearance.
Published in 2021, Go Tell the Bees That I Am Gone is the ninth book in Diana Gabaldon’s ten-book Outlander series and will form the basis for the final season of the TV show. We knew before the new episodes aired that the show would likely differ from the books, as Gabaldon hadn’t finished writing the ending yet. This left fans wondering how much of the ninth book would actually be included. I’m excited to see the character Elspeth Cunningham appear in season 8 of Outlander.
Elspeth Cunningham Is Very Different From The Outlander Characters We Are Used To
Captain Charles Cunningham’s mother, Elspeth Cunningham, didn’t exactly make a positive first impression when she appeared in season 8 of Outlander. She showed up at the new house on Fraser’s Ridge with some herbs for Claire, and immediately slapped Mandy before predicting everyone’s damnation. Initially, this made her seem like just another potential enemy who might accuse Claire of witchcraft and get her into trouble again, or turn the community against her. However, the second episode of the season quickly revealed that Elspeth is more complex than she appears.
Elspeth is quickly becoming a standout character in the Outlander series, and the show is now revealing why. While she appears tough and unrefined, she possesses a surprising amount of compassion. In season 8, episode 2, she unexpectedly arrives at Claire’s surgery and immediately begins helping prepare Amy McCallum’s body for the wake. Elspeth accepts Claire’s methods without question and eagerly offers her assistance. However, even her kindest words come across as forceful, leaving Claire unusually speechless.
Elspeth Cunningham is a fascinating character. Initially, she seems critical and calculating, but her behavior proves that first impression wrong. She’s surprisingly down-to-earth and experienced, making her a fun and relatable presence. Given her family ties to Captain Cunningham, we braced ourselves for a villain, but instead, Elspeth is someone who sparks genuine curiosity and joy.
How Mrs. Cunningham Will Impact Claire & Jamie’s Story In Outlander Season 8
Please be aware that the following information reveals key plot points from the Outlander books, and may contain spoilers for upcoming episodes in season 8.
Elspeth Cunningham is poised to be a significant and challenging character as Outlander season 8 unfolds. She’s expected to be a difficult opponent for Claire, constantly keeping her on her toes, and poses a particular threat to Fanny. Claire worries that Fanny’s past – specifically, being raised in a brothel – will shock Elspeth, but the books reveal a surprising twist: Elspeth actually makes lighthearted jokes about prostitution and those who work in the trade.
This scene perfectly showcases the humor Mrs. Cunningham would bring to Outlander, but her role is much more than just comedic relief. As the Revolutionary War reaches Fraser’s Ridge, her husband finds himself opposing Jamie, putting Elspeth and Claire in a difficult position. Despite this conflict, Elspeth remains a loyal friend to Claire, offering her comfort and support as the men she cares about face off against each other.
Elspeth Cunningham is a fascinating character because she seems to hold two opposing qualities at once. As an older, experienced woman, she understands the pain and consequences of war for everyone involved. While she definitely has her own opinions and isn’t afraid to share them, she approaches situations with a grounded and compassionate perspective. This really affects Claire’s journey in the Outlander books, and I’m excited to see how that relationship plays out on screen.
