Prime Video’s 2-Part Fantasy Series Was Canceled Too Early

When you think of fantasy TV, shows like Game of Thrones with its dragons or The Vampire Diaries might come to mind. However, Carnival Row is a particularly intelligent and well-made entry in the genre. Despite strong performances from Orlando Bloom and Cara Delevingne, the show was unfortunately canceled by Prime Video after just two seasons, preventing it from reaching its full potential and becoming widely popular.

Even though it only lasted a short time, Carnival Row quickly became known for its insightful social commentary, combined with a remarkably detailed fantasy setting. Its unique blend of Victorian aesthetics, steampunk elements, and relevant modern themes created a truly original series that, unfortunately, didn’t get the chance to fully explore its potential.

Carnival Row Was A Refreshing Change Of Pace For The Fantasy Genre

From the start, the show stands out with its unique blend of mythical creatures like faeries and fauns, presented in a visually striking style reminiscent of Peaky Blinders. However, Carnival Row offered more than just beautiful visuals. The story revolves around the city of Burgue, which is caught in a growing conflict with the New Dawn, a group trying to overthrow the established government.

Things are really tense here in the Burgue. With more and more mythological creatures moving in, and this extremist faerie group, the Black Raven, gaining power, there’s a lot of prejudice bubbling under the surface. What’s so interesting is how everyone reacts to the arrival of fauns and faeries – it feels incredibly real, because it mirrors things that have happened in our own world. Honestly, these creatures aren’t just there for entertainment; they’re a way for the story to explore what’s happening in society and make some really thought-provoking points.

The love stories in Carnival Row are a pleasant surprise. Instead of the typical pairing of the main characters, Orlando Bloom’s Philo and Cara Delevingne’s Vignette take an unexpected path. This allows the show to delve deeper into what makes them tick and gives them a more satisfying, less predictable conclusion.

Carnival Row Should’ve Been As Successful As True Blood

HBO’s True Blood lasted seven seasons and, despite being set in present-day Louisiana, had many similarities to Carnival Row that suggested it would also be successful. Similar to the character Philo, Sookie from True Blood is part fae who appears human and feels compassion for the non-human residents of her town, which leads to her being rejected by many humans.

Similar to the world of True Blood, the town of Bon Temps in Carnival Row experiences a rapid increase in the number of mythical creatures, and humans react with fear and discrimination. This creates a compelling story about prejudice and injustice, guided by a complex main character who challenges conventional thinking. Given these strong similarities, Carnival Row deserved the same level of popularity as True Blood.

Carnival Row Is Yet Another High Concept Show Prime Video Canceled Too Soon

Sadly, Carnival Row isn’t the only science fiction series on Prime Video to get canceled early. It joins other ambitious and well-received shows like Outer Range, The Peripheral, and Tales from the Loop, all of which were cut before they could complete a third season.

While these shows might not be hugely popular, platforms like Apple TV are giving them the space to develop and stand out. In contrast, Prime Video focuses on series based on well-known brands and franchises, like Reacher, Bosch, and The Summer I Turned Pretty.

As a fan, I was excited when Prime Video started trying out some different, more unique shows. It’s how things like Carnival Row even got made! But it was so frustrating that they canceled them so quickly – the shows never really had a chance to reach their full potential. It felt like a half-hearted attempt, honestly.
