While some actors from Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy, like Sir Ian McKellen and Elijah Wood, are expected to reprise their roles in Andy Serkis’ new film, The Hunt for Gollum, the movie will mostly feature new cast members. Though many of these actors haven’t been announced yet, Deadline reports that Kate Winslet, famous for her role as Rose in Titanic, will play the female lead.

Kate Winslet is a highly acclaimed actress, with an Academy Award and multiple BAFTAs to her name. However, her role in The Hunt for Gollum is particularly exciting for The Lord of the Rings fans because director Andy Serkis is fulfilling a long-held wish of Peter Jackson, the original trilogy’s director.

Peter Jackson Wanted to Cast Kate Winslet in The Lord of the Rings

In 1994, Kate Winslet made her film debut in a movie based on a true New Zealand murder case. Director Peter Jackson was very impressed with her performance and wanted to cast her in his upcoming fantasy trilogy. Her rising popularity, boosted by the success of Titanic a few years earlier, made her an even more appealing choice as filming for The Lord of the Rings approached.

Peter Jackson considered Kate Winslet for two roles. First, he thought she’d be perfect as Éowyn, a warrior in The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers. While Winslet was eager to collaborate with Jackson again, she declined the offer because the year-long filming commitment in New Zealand was too demanding. Ultimately, the role of Éowyn went to another actress, and Winslet later provided voice work for Éowyn in Kenji Kamiyama’s The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim.

Peter Jackson also considered Kate Winslet for a surprising role: the Mouth of Sauron in the extended cut of The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. While the character ultimately appeared as a frightening man who tried to demoralize the heroes with false news of Frodo’s death, commentary on the film revealed Jackson initially envisioned the role differently.

Peter Jackson thought about making the Mouth of Sauron a beautiful woman to try and convince Aragorn to side with the Dark Lord. This would have been a big change from J.R.R. Tolkien’s original book, but it was inspired by something Tolkien wrote earlier. Before The Lord of the Rings, Sauron often appeared as a fair and attractive figure to trick the good people of Middle-earth, so having one of his followers do the same wouldn’t have been completely out of place.

Filming could have been rearranged to work with Kate Winslet’s availability. However, the plan to make the Mouth of Sauron a female character was dropped early on, and it doesn’t appear Winslet was ever considered for the role. Ultimately, Bruce Spence played the Mouth of Sauron, using makeup and digital effects to create the character’s appearance.

The casting in The Lord of the Rings was spot-on, and director Peter Jackson always hoped Kate Winslet could be part of the films. Now, with The Hunt for Gollum, she’s finally joining his vision of Middle-earth. While Deadline hasn’t revealed who Winslet will play, if it’s not a character from The Hobbit movies, there are a few possibilities.

There’s talk that Kate Winslet might play Gollum’s grandmother, a character briefly mentioned in the original book. Before Gollum became the creature we know, he was part of a hobbit family living by the Gladden River. His grandmother, the head of their family, banished him because he kept using the One Ring to bully other hobbits.

I’m really excited about the potential casting choices for this new series! I’ve heard rumors that Kate Winslet could play Gilraen, Aragorn’s mother – we actually see a memorial to her in the extended version of The Fellowship of the Ring. Since Aragorn is going to be the main character, it makes sense they’ll show us more about his family. But the biggest buzz is about Winslet potentially taking over the role of Galadriel, previously played by Cate Blanchett. Even though Galadriel wasn’t in the original story, she has a history with both Aragorn and Gandalf, so including her would actually fit really well with the plot they’re building.

With over twenty years having passed since The Lord of the Rings films, fans are hoping the new film, The Hunt for Gollum, can recreate the same sense of wonder. The casting of Kate Winslet is encouraging, as she’s a talented actress and clearly favored by director Peter Jackson.
