Reality TV always seems to include someone who desperately wants to be a singer, and on The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives, that person is Demi. It’s unclear how long she and her husband, Brett, have been pursuing this dream, but we now see them practicing vocals on the way to a recording studio. Demi frequently feels like people are trying to make her look bad, and this scene really supports that idea. It’s not that their cover of “True Colors” is terrible – it’s that Demi spends the whole session harshly criticizing Brett’s singing while not holding herself to the same standards. Honestly, even if Demi wasn’t a great singer, she’d be more likable if she weren’t so critical. But she makes it hard to root for her, and that’s why we’re still, after countless discussions, questioning her honesty about Marciano.
The third episode of The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives focuses on the upcoming season three reunion. While things seemed peaceful at the end of last season, the mothers are still hesitant to fully accept Demi back into the group, and the reunion will be a crucial test of whether their fragile peace will last. Everything now depends on Demi being able to convince the other women that her story is true. As the reunion nears, the women, known as MomTok, prepare to confront Demi again about her claims that Marciano sexually assaulted her.
Zac, back in Los Angeles after his time at Vanderpump Villa, now completely believes Demi’s accusations. He tells Jen that hearing Marciano’s side of things confirmed everything Demi said. This is all Jen needs to hear, especially since she’s not a fan of Demi. She’s stuck talking to Whitney, Demi’s only remaining supporter, which isn’t ideal. Jen is dreading a potential reunion because she knows Demi strongly dislikes her. Whitney mostly responds with nods and agreements, occasionally saying both sides have valid feelings. While Whitney wishes everyone would just move past the issue with Marciano, she’s prepared to defend Jen until Demi shows real change in her behavior. Jen says she trusts her gut feeling, and right now, she feels like Demi is dishonest and will try to upset her on camera.
Jessi is just as eager as Jen to show that Demi is dishonest and doesn’t deserve their support. Back in Utah, Jessi gets the group together for tacos – everyone except Whitney (who’s still in L.A.), Taylor (who’s recovering from surgery), and Mikayla (whose whereabouts are unknown) – to talk about Demi. With the reunion just two days away, Jessi wants everyone to agree on how much they distrust Demi. Jessi starts by saying that Demi privately seemed to admit she exaggerated things with Marciano, which makes Jen smile. However, Jessi believes Gabi holds the key evidence. Gabi claims she sensed a pattern of emotional cheating by Demi during a recent energy healing session, though Demi denied it happened with Marciano. Jessi presents this as definitive proof of Demi’s dishonesty, and while the other women don’t fully trust Gabi, they generally agree that Demi isn’t being genuine with them.
Demi claims Marciano sexually assaulted her at Vanderpump Villa, but he strongly denies it and is suing her for defamation. Since there’s no footage available to confirm either story, I’ll simply say this: you can disagree with Demi’s behavior without dismissing her potential experience as a survivor. It’s important to remember that not everyone who experiences sexual assault is someone we automatically like or agree with, and that doesn’t invalidate what happened to them.
The reunion episode finally happened, and it was awkward – we’d all seen it a few months prior when it originally aired. We relived painful moments, like Brett mocking Zac’s voice and Demi’s shockingly insensitive question to Jen, who had previously shared her struggles with suicidal thoughts. Even when Demi later broke down, saying she just wanted to be understood, the other women struggled to offer her full support. Miranda summed up the group’s feelings best in a private interview. She explained that Demi’s lack of honesty and empathy made it hard for anyone to feel sympathetic. Miranda added that they all would have been more willing to listen if Demi had been upfront from the start.
Even after the reunion, Demi still had a chance to move forward. Reunions often give people one last opportunity to air their issues before letting go of old conflicts and starting new ones. However, by skipping Whitney’s event afterward, Demi may have ruined her chances. While Whitney is understanding and allows for Demi needing a break, Taylor sees this as a major mistake.
Taylor asked, her voice sharp with concern, “Where is she?” She couldn’t believe Demi wasn’t there. This event was for Whitney, her closest friend. Being part of the ‘MomTok’ community meant supporting each other, especially at important events. If Demi couldn’t even be there for her best friend, Taylor wondered how she could truly be considered a member of the group.
