Honestly, I was surprised to hear Ed Sheeran talking about the reaction to his Game of Thrones cameo. He basically said he just gets a lot of negativity thrown his way no matter what he does, and it’s a bit sad to see, but relatable! It sounds like people were pretty critical of his appearance, and he’s just voicing how frustrating that is.
As Game of Thrones grew into a massive television hit, HBO started getting frequent requests for famous actors to make appearances on the show.
The show was a hit with musicians, featuring appearances by members of popular bands like Coldplay, Of Monsters and Men, Snow Patrol, Mastodon, and Sigur Rós.
While brief appearances by other artists generally went unnoticed, Ed Sheeran’s cameo caused a huge reaction online. Now, almost a decade later, he’s looking back on that experience.
Ed Sheeran explains why Game of Thrones cameo “ruffled feathers”

Maisie Williams, known for her role in Game of Thrones, was a big fan of Ed Sheeran. Because of this, the show’s creators asked Sheeran to make a brief appearance in Season 7, Episode 1. He played a Lannister soldier who sings a song while sharing a meal with Arya Stark.
Ed Sheeran’s brief appearance on the show quickly drew harsh criticism online. Jeremy Podeswa, a director on Game of Thrones, explained to Newsweek that Sheeran genuinely wanted to contribute positively and perform well, and that was the most unfortunate part of the whole situation.
Honestly, if you hadn’t already known who Ed was before seeing the show, you probably wouldn’t have given his performance a second thought. It seems like a lot of the talk around it is coming from outside the actual story. But within the show itself, I thought he did a great job and really fit the part – he felt totally natural in that world.
Shortly after the episode aired, Ed was asked if his character could still be alive. He expressed doubt, and jokingly added that audiences probably didn’t want to see him return.
Looking back after almost ten years, Ed Sheeran admits he caused some trouble when he appeared on ‘Game of Thrones,’ as he shared on the Friends Keep Secrets podcast.
Sheeran said he had fun filming the scene, and he thinks he’s been criticized more than bands like Coldplay and Snow Patrol for a reason he doesn’t quite understand.
Sheeran recalls feeling incredibly visible and constantly in the public eye at the time, which he found unsettling. He says similar situations arise frequently in his career, and he often receives unfair criticism for them.
Despite the negative reaction, he continues to take on acting roles where he plays himself, appearing as Ed Sheeran in the films Yesterday and Red Notice, and even making a cameo as ‘Ed Shearin’ in Zootropolis 2.
