Blumhouse Is Officially Remaking A 7-Year-Old Critically Acclaimed Korean Action Thriller Into An American Movie

Blumhouse is officially remaking a critically acclaimed Korean movie.

The studio has announced it will remake the 2019 Korean film, The Gangster, The Cop, The Devil. The movie, written and directed by Lee Won-tae, centers around an unlikely alliance between a gangster and a police officer. They join forces to hunt down a serial killer, each driven by their own motives for bringing him to justice.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, James Wan will direct an American remake of the South Korean film The Gangster, The Cop, The Devil. Paramount Pictures will distribute the movie, and Ma Dong-seok (also known as Don Lee) will reprise his role as the crime boss Jang Dong-soo from the original film.

Blumhouse and Atomic Monster, James Wan’s production company, are teaming up to produce the film, with Michael Clear also producing. Additional production support comes from Big Punch Global, representing talent including Lee and Sylvester Stallone, as well as Balboa Productions, B&C Group, and BA Entertainment. Shay Hatten is writing the script, and Brian Helgeland will serve as an executive producer.

Blumhouse secured the rights to remake the Korean action thriller back in 2022, but production is just starting now. This is one of several projects James Wan is working on; he’s also producing the next Paranormal Activity film, which Paramount will release.

With The Gangster, The Cop, The Devil, James Wan is returning to directing larger-scale films after completing his work in the DC Extended Universe with Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom in 2023. This project is also significant for Paramount Pictures, which has been actively recruiting talented individuals as part of its successful attempt to acquire Warner Bros. – a strategy that appears to be working well.

Don Lee is expected to play a character similar to the one he originated, but adapted for an American audience. Casting for his co-stars hasn’t been announced, and it’s currently unknown whether the film will follow the same plot as the original.

Despite a busy slate of upcoming projects, The Gangster, The Cop, The Devil looks set to be a standout film from Blumhouse. The movie is a gritty, action-filled crime thriller that shares similarities with director Wan’s past work, but still feels fresh and unique. We can expect more details as the film gets closer to production.
