Henry Alonso Myers, an executive producer and co-showrunner for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, recently shared exciting news about Star Trek: Year One, a potential spin-off series focusing on Captain James T. Kirk (played by Paul Wesley) and the Starship Enterprise. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds finished filming its fifth season last December and is now in the process of editing and finishing the episodes.
While promoting season 3 of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, producers Akiva Goldsman and Henry Alonso Myers shared their plans for a spin-off series starring Paul Wesley as a young Captain James Kirk, focusing on his initial year commanding the Enterprise. But as they became increasingly focused on producing season 5 of Strange New Worlds later in the year, updates about this potential spin-off, known as Star Trek: Year One, stopped appearing.
At the Saturn Awards, where Star Trek received a Hall of Fame Award, TrekMovie’s Anthony Pascale spoke with Henry Alonso Myers. Myers revealed that he and Richard Goldsman have formally proposed Star Trek: Year One to Paramount+. He said the project is currently under consideration, but expressed confidence that the studio is enthusiastic about both Strange New Worlds and the Star Trek franchise as a whole.
I’ve been working hard to get this show to them, and I really feel like we’ve given them something special. Now it’s up to them to make a decision. From what I understand, they genuinely appreciate our work and, of course, they’re huge Star Trek fans, which is incredibly encouraging.
We believe a new series would be a natural progression for the Star Trek storyline we’ve been developing, but the decision isn’t up to us.
Henry Alonso Myers shared some good news with TrekMovie: the sets used for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds are still in place. Since the show filmed at CBS Stages Canada near Toronto, this suggests that Paul Wesley might reprise his role as Captain Kirk and take command of the Starship Enterprise, potentially following Anson Mount’s Captain Pike.
So far, our filming sets are still intact. That’s the key thing right now. The decision facing those in charge is whether to keep holding onto the sets, since they haven’t been torn down yet. We’re just waiting to hear what they decide.
Henry Alonso Myers responded to a question from TrekMovie about whether Paramount+ is waiting to see how well Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 4 does before deciding on Star Trek: Year One. It seems the decision largely depends on Akiva Goldsman’s ability to reach an agreement with the studio.
I’m not sure what the future holds, but I’m focused on finishing post-production for seasons four and five and completing the show. I generally avoid worrying about the studio’s decisions – that’s a separate process. Akiva is more assertive when advocating for things, while I tend to take a gentler approach, but I ultimately agree with his vision.
Responding to a question from TrekMovie about the lack of any new Star Trek projects currently in production or development – a first in ten years – Henry Alonso Myers stated his main focus is finishing post-production on Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.
Henry Alonso Myers explained that despite recent discussions, production on Strange New Worlds is continuing as planned. They’ve already filmed 16 unseen episodes and are currently working on two full seasons, a process that will take a considerable amount of time – likely around 18 months. He also mentioned that filming for Starfleet Academy just wrapped up recently, but creating high-quality content like this simply takes time.
Akiva Goldsman and Henry Alonso Myers have shared that Star Trek: Year One will tell original stories about Captain Kirk’s initial adventures on the USS Enterprise, taking place before the events of “Where No Man Has Gone Before,” the second pilot episode of Star Trek: The Original Series. The series won’t simply retell stories from the original Star Trek episodes.
I was completely captivated by the latest Star Trek: Strange New Worlds episode, “The Sehlat Who Ate Its Tail”! Directed by Valerie Weiss and penned by David Reed and Bill Wolkoff, it’s a fantastic look at a young James T. Kirk taking command of the USS Farragut for the very first time. It really shows how he became the captain we know and love, and it was amazing to see his first steps in leadership.
It was no accident that Kirk took command with the people who would become his core USS Enterprise crew around him – Spock, Scotty, Uhura, and Nurse Chapel – setting the stage for their return in Star Trek: Year One.
The latest episode of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds (season 3, episode 6) was a hit with fans, easing concerns about a potential spin-off series focusing on Paul Wesley as Captain Kirk. The episode, titled “The Sehlat Who Ate Its Tail,” successfully demonstrated that a Star Trek: Year One series could work, and it also continued to develop the strong friendship between Wesley’s Kirk and Ethan Peck’s Spock.
The news that Thomas Jane would play Dr. Leonard “Bones” McCoy and Kai Murakami would play Hikaru Sulu in the finale of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has intensified speculation about a possible Star Trek: Year One series. Many believe casting an actor as well-known as Thomas Jane for even a single episode of Strange New Worlds suggests plans for a future spinoff show centered around that era.
As a huge Trek fan, I’m still eagerly awaiting season 4 of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds – it’s probably coming to Paramount+ this summer. But honestly, the bigger question is where Star Trek itself is headed. Paramount Skydance is figuring out the long-term plan for this 60-year-old universe, and I’m really hoping that includes more adventures with Paul Wesley as Kirk and Ethan Peck as Spock, especially in that Year One project they’ve been talking about!
