Summer House Recap: No Joke

This episode feels like a turning point in the season! There’s a lot of entertainment and drama, and surprisingly little focus on the issues between Kymanda – largely because Kyle spent around $9,000 on a birthday watch for Amanda. Good move, Kyle! Amanda admits the gift is as much about getting everyone to finally approve of his present-giving as it is about the gift itself, since he’s previously given less impressive gifts. Plus, Amanda even stayed out late celebrating her birthday, making everyone happy. Maybe Kyle should consider more extravagant gifts in the future.

Despite appearing more relaxed than they have in years, Kyle and Amanda’s episode largely revolves around Amanda’s birthday dinner. A tense conversation occurs between Jesse Solomon and Kyle regarding Kyle’s lack of investment in Soft Bar. Kyle explains he’s on Loverboy’s advisory board but couldn’t invest due to needing $500,000 to cover payroll, a situation Carl was reportedly aware of. Jesse clarifies that Carl’s frustration was more about feelings than money. Kyle intends to discuss this with Carl, suggesting it’s an unresolved issue that may be connected to the physical fight teased in the season trailer.

Another dramatic moment happens when the new cast members arrive. Everyone’s dressed up for a fancy dinner honoring Amanda, who looks stunning in a yellow two-piece dress. Kyle gets points for re-wearing a wedding outfit and looking sharp, while KJ adds a unique touch to his tuxedo with a durag, open shirt, and gold chain. While everyone is formally dressed, Jesse suggests they each share something nice about Amanda. Honestly, haven’t we learned that the only game that works is figuring out who not to trust? Jesse starts, saying Amanda is one of the funniest people he knows, and West praises her accomplishments. Mia notes that Amanda doesn’t seem concerned with fitting in. The mood changes when it’s Ben’s turn – he has a crush on Amanda. He begins by saying, “I’m a big eyes and smile guy…”

Bailey suddenly blurted out, “Ben’s about to tell everyone he wants to sleep with you.” The room went completely silent – it was shockingly awkward. Everyone was stunned, and then a wave of disbelief rippled through the group. Bailey explained she already knew the story – how they’d first met while skinny dipping at a wedding. Thankfully, she stopped talking, and Ben finished his thought, but the game was over before we even got to Ciara, who would have undoubtedly said something scandalous and blamed Kyle. Maybe Bailey actually did us a favor by preventing a huge drama from unfolding.

After dinner, Amanda chatted with the girls and assured them she wasn’t actually bothered. She figured Bailey was just a little flustered around Ben, and honestly, Levi had the best line of the whole episode – she kept saying it was a terrible way to flirt, and she really sold it! I really do think it was just a joke, and as someone who’s definitely bombed a joke before and wanted the floor to swallow me whole, I get how mortifying it can be. Was it a poorly executed joke? Absolutely. But is it something to get seriously upset about? I don’t think so.

So, the guys were hanging out in the VIP area, and West and the others were clearly shocked by something. Ben thought the whole situation was super awkward, and apparently, Bailey has a habit of saying things that come off a bit strong. Ben even admitted everyone’s been joking that he’s interested in his friend’s wife, which just sent the whole group into hysterics about how distinctly Australian he sounds – they all burst out laughing and headed out. Honestly, as an American living in London, I totally get it. I can’t even mention “college” without my friends playfully making fun of my pronunciation, repeating “college, college, college” like a bunch of silly geese. It’s a good reminder to just roll with it, you know?

I feel for Ben about people teasing his accent, but I don’t think he handled the situation with Bailey well. It was good that he addressed it directly, because it’s important to resolve conflicts early, but his approach wasn’t right. He admitted that if he’s doing something that bothers others, he needs to change it – and he is doing something that’s raising eyebrows. Bailey was right to notice that Ben seems overly attentive to Amanda. This could be because they were friends beforehand, or simply because Amanda and Mia are the only women in committed relationships in the house. Bailey specifically mentioned Ben always being there for Amanda – with a towel at the pool, making her coffee, and even playfully spinning her around. So, it’s understandable why Bailey thought what she did, and why she brought it up. Ben acknowledges he’s the one creating the impression, but he’s trying to make it Bailey’s fault instead of taking responsibility.

Ben found Bailey’s room completely messed up, and she explained it was because she’d been jokingly looking for a monster under the bed, referencing how they first met. Ben felt this was disrespectful. While Bailey quickly apologized, Ben didn’t let it go, wanting to know if there was something more to it. He tried to address the situation calmly, making it clear the comment wasn’t okay but acknowledging it seemed intended as a joke, and reinforcing their friendship while also setting a limit on such remarks. However, the conversation quickly escalated. Ben accused Bailey of not even trying to be funny and insisted she was being dishonest. He continued to push for a different response, but she repeatedly claimed it was just a joke, which only frustrated him further because she wasn’t giving him the explanation he wanted.

He quickly becomes really unpleasant. While Bailey is finally explaining things he wanted to hear, he abruptly stands up and looks away. She asks him to look at her while she’s speaking, but he dismissively says he’s stepping around her mess. Honestly, it’s not his place to criticize Bailey’s room to her face – that’s my job, to do it privately! He insists it wasn’t a joke, then grudgingly accepts her apology and leaves. As he’s leaving, Mia is standing outside talking on her phone, and he tells her – likely both her and Bailey – to “stay out of it.” That was the moment I stopped liking Ben. Look, he might have been embarrassed by his comment, but why not just be honest instead of being a jerk? It was a poorly thought-out joke, and it didn’t need to escalate into a big deal.

Okay, so Bailey decided to stay in from the club, which was honestly a good call. Levi was all about that cozy night in too, letting everyone else have their fun. But while they were chilling, a way more interesting storyline started brewing – could Wiara actually get back together?! After the club, everyone ended up back in the VIP room (where all the drama happens, naturally), and things got… intense. Ciara was on the floor, and West was right on top of her! She called him out on it, saying he only does that when he likes someone, and yep, it’s still clear he’s got feelings for her. Poor Jesse was totally watching and clearly wasn’t happy about it. And West? He had another one of those perfect confessionals. He was trying to explain that it’s not a ‘crush’ because they don’t hang out during the day, but then he went on this hilarious rant about how you can fall in love in a club! He was joking about it being an ‘after-hours crush’ or a ‘sunset crush’ – anything but a ‘breakfast crush’! Seriously, he was grinning so hard while talking to Kyle about it, I swear every mouse in the Hamptons came running to witness the chaos – and maybe snag some Amazon packages!

West wandered into the kitchen, half-dressed in just shorts and beaming, on a quest for buffalo chicken dip. Honestly, he’s never looked more attractive, approachable, and utterly charming. Forget the dip – he was the prize! Ciara was already in the kitchen, and West admitted he was struggling to figure out how to approach her. Her reply – “I designed it that way” – was brilliant. It’s a perfect strategy: keep him guessing, make him work for her attention. That’s why Ciara is so captivating. What West really meant was he wasn’t sure if he should discuss things while the cameras were rolling, but he definitely wanted to have a conversation.

The following afternoon, the group visited a winery, and there were a few sweet interactions. Kyle playfully did a funny photoshoot with Ciara, hilariously failing at being a good Instagram boyfriend. Ciara and Ben had a good conversation about getting to know each other, and Ben revealed he used to date someone until he told her he loved her. (Is that who he’s with now?) While I’m starting to dislike Ben, he’s connecting with everyone and stirring up some drama. Surprisingly, it seems like he’s finally finding his place and becoming more comfortable with himself.

There’s a tender moment back at the house after KJ reveals he and Dara are now together. While West and Ben relax, Ben shares that he cares for both West and Ciara and hopes they can resolve their issues. West opens up about what went wrong between him and Ciara, admitting he has regrets and misses her, but feels lost about what to do. Overwhelmed, he seeks comfort, burying his face in the crook of Ben’s arm, needing a safe and loving space. He realizes he wants to feel that comfort so he can then give it to Ciara – to show her he’s fully committed and they can move forward. It’s a long shot, but viewers, like those with their own emotional baggage, are secretly hoping these two can find their way back to each other.
