Emma Leaphorn’s Resistance To Joe’s Retirement In Dark Winds Explained

Emma Leaphorn isn’t simply worried about the money or the change to their daily lives when it comes to Joe’s retirement. Her resistance stems from the difficult past of their relationship and the profound sadness they’ve both experienced.

Emma plays the wife of Joe, a Navajo police lieutenant, in the AMC series set in the 1970s American Southwest. The show follows Joe and his colleague, Jim Chee, as they solve a string of violent crimes within the Navajo Nation.

Emma is often seen as a kind and spiritual figure in the community, providing a moral center, especially as Joe struggles with difficult thoughts. However, their relationship has been strained, particularly since the loss of their son, Joe Jr., and Leaphorn’s determination to find and punish the person he believes caused J.J.’s death. Despite the complexities, Emma recognizes that Joe’s work isn’t just a career – it’s what helps him cope with his grief and anger.

Allison discussed with ScreenRant’s Tatiana Hullender how Emma felt about Joe’s decision to retire, and how that impacts both him and their future together.

Why Emma Doesn’t Want Joe To Retire And What She Sees For The Future Of Their Relationship

Although the TV show isn’t exactly like the original Tony Hillerman novels, Allison revisited the earlier depiction of Emma in the books to understand their connection better. She focused on remembering Joe’s deep love for Emma as a key part of their dynamic.

Emma has always been supportive of her husband’s work as a Navajo Nation police officer. As a nurse herself, she understands the vital importance of both healthcare professionals and law enforcement within the Navajo community, which is a large area – about the size of West Virginia. She recognizes his skill and dedication – she married him because he’s exceptional. Ultimately, his decision about whether or not to retire will likely be a personal one based on how he wants to spend his time.

Allison also doesn’t think Emma should retire, explaining to ScreenRant that, in Navajo culture, there’s a belief that “there’s always work to be done.”

Deanna Allison explains that in Navajo culture, people don’t really retire, and that’s especially true for artists. It’s a way of life where age isn’t seen as a reason to stop, but rather as a source of wisdom and continued purpose. While others might feel discouraged by getting older, Navajo people view it as a time of enlightenment – a chance to look ahead and keep striving towards meaningful work.

Regarding Joe’s retirement, Allison emphasized that Emma never pressured him to step down. She believes it’s something he’s been considering for a long time on his own. However, while she’s always supported him, her trust was shaken when he pursued BJ Vines, believing him responsible for the mining accident that killed their son. This led her to lie to the FBI to protect Joe.

Deanna Allison explains that her friend consistently supported her husband for being himself, but that changed when he committed murder and she was forced to lie for him. Then, another person, J.J., was also murdered. These repeated traumas, especially later in their lives, ultimately led them to reconsider and abandon their plans for retirement.

Allison thinks Emma fully supports Leaphorn and his decisions. But she also recognizes his talent and ultimately wants him to pursue what will make him happy, just like anyone who cares deeply for someone would.

Allison discussed the couple’s split and their reconnection in season 4, explaining how these events affect their future. She acknowledged Leaphorn’s feelings for his wife, but also pointed out that she was the one who decided to leave and pursue a job in Los Angeles.

I believe he still cares about her. You could see that when he reached for her hands, and she seemed surprised and a little taken aback. However, she made a brave decision to leave, especially considering how deeply she feels. From Emma’s perspective, she needs to prioritize her well-being and focus on her daily life – work, bills, and just getting by. That’s what I think is driving her actions right now.

What Emma’s L.A. Move Means For Her On The Show

Emma, a well-regarded nurse, moves to Los Angeles after separating from her husband, Joe. This change allows her to explore a new side of herself and opens doors to unexpected opportunities in her career and personal life. Though she and Joe briefly tried to reconcile, Emma’s finding satisfaction in her work in L.A., making her future – and their future together – unclear.

ScreenRant asked if the actor had any personal ideas about what their character, Emma, did outside of her job at the hospital, or if they’d discussed this with Joe Worth.

Deanna Allison explained that receiving the basic information for her role was just the starting point. She then had the freedom to develop the character’s inner life and motivations as she saw fit. When she first read the script, her immediate focus was on finding a personal connection to the character, Emma, and understanding how Emma would react to the circumstances presented.

ScreenRant asked Emma which book adaptation she was most looking forward to, or what part of the story she was particularly eager to explore.

I’m really enjoying the direction of ‘Ghost Way,’ especially setting part of the story in Los Angeles. It’s allowed Emma to show a different side of herself. While both she and Leaphorn are college-educated, Emma represents Navajo women who pursued education elsewhere and then returned to the reservation. Seeing her navigate a rapidly changing world is compelling. I think this experience has unlocked something within her, revealing possibilities she hadn’t considered before. I particularly appreciate the choice to place her in L.A., as it’s been a strong element of the story.

ScreenRant: Assuming you stay in L.A., I hope we’ll still be seeing you in future seasons in L.A.

I’m a big fan of Tony Hillerman’s books, and I think the adaptation of ‘Emma’ is really well done, especially because characters often cross over between his novels. With this new television series, we’re diving deeper into the emotional fallout from the loss of their child, which I believe was a pivotal moment that fractured their marriage – particularly for Joe Leaphorn. That’s a key aspect of this adaptation that we’re focusing on.
