Timothée Chalamet, the star of Marty Supreme, is hoping to win a Best Actor Oscar and has been actively promoting his performance. During a February conversation with Matthew McConaughey at the University of Texas at Austin, Chalamet jokingly said that few people appreciate art forms like ballet or opera, and he wouldn’t be interested in participating in them. This comment has sparked controversy, drawing criticism from both fans and fellow artists who defend the importance of the arts.
On the talk show The View, the hosts reacted to Timothée Chalamet’s recent comments. Whoopi Goldberg called them disrespectful and dismissed his apology as insincere, suggesting he’d face minimal consequences. Sunny Hostin, according to Entertainment Weekly, added that she was “offended and disappointed” by his words, and didn’t expect such a “vapid and shallow” statement from him. Goldberg then shared her own thoughts on the matter.
Coming from a family involved in the arts, it’s disappointing to hear you criticize someone else’s work. You might not have fully thought it through when you made the initial comment, and then you made things worse by downplaying the potential reaction. People will likely be much more upset than you seem to think, so please be mindful of how your words affect others.
She explained that saying “no disrespect” after an insult doesn’t make it better. It actually makes the situation worse because it still comes across as disrespectful. She used the example of saying something is “dumb, no disrespect” – she believes that’s still completely disrespectful, and people shouldn’t apologize after they’ve already insulted someone.
Whoopi Goldberg and Sunny Hostin weren’t the only well-known personalities to discuss the issue; comedian Patton Oswalt also spoke out, criticizing Timothée Chalamet’s comments.
At the Motion Picture Sound Editors Golden Reel Awards, Patton Oswalt made a humorous remark, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter, expressing his relief that the event celebrated sound editing rather than performing arts like ballet or opera. He joked that the work being honored was truly deserving of recognition.
Oswalt explained that the controversy happened after Oscar voting had already finished, so the actor’s chances aren’t affected. He’s in a good position and won’t be penalized.
When an actor publicly criticizes an entire type of film, it almost always causes a reaction, as seen when Martin Scorsese said he wasn’t a fan of superhero movies. This sparked a lot of debate among fans and people working on those films. Understanding the situation behind the comments can help explain why they were made.
While talking with a former co-star from Interstellar, Timothée Chalamet explained that he’s impressed by actors who can enthusiastically promote their films on talk shows and encourage people to go to the cinema. He also admitted that it can be tough to feel like a movie deserves a theatrical release when it doesn’t naturally draw audiences in, and that it’s challenging to be in a film that feels like it needs convincing to be enjoyed.
Part of me believes that if people are excited about something – like the movies Barbie or Oppenheimer – they’ll make sure to see it and will be enthusiastic about it. I don’t want to be involved in art forms like ballet or opera where there’s a constant effort to keep them going even when public interest is low. I apologize if that sounded disrespectful to anyone involved in those arts – it was unnecessary to say.
Saying that nobody cares about opera or ballet is a broad statement, but Timothée Chalamet’s comments do point to a difference in how younger and older generations view these art forms. At 30, he probably doesn’t fully appreciate their significance, and as a well-known actor with many followers, his remarks have understandably caused a strong reaction.
