GreedFall: The Dying World is not looking like the win embattled French publisher Nacon needs.
Initial reviews for the PS5 version are out, and they suggest it’s not quite as good as the first game, though it’s not a complete failure.
Currently, the sequel has a Metacritic score of 65, based on six reviews. This is lower than the original game’s score of 72, which was calculated from around 39 reviews.
So, Game Reactor UK thinks this new game is gonna be right up the alley of us old-school RPG fans – people who loved games like Knights of the Old Republic and the first Dragon Age. But here’s the thing, they also point out that while it feels like those classics, it didn’t quite hook them the way those originals did.
Almost all of the reviews note the game has a particularly slow start.
Greedfall 2: The Dying World begins slowly, which initially detracts from the overall experience. But after a brief introductory period, the game delivers the type of RPG gameplay Spider Interactive is known for – engaging characters, complex political narratives, and simple, direct exploration.
Here are some of the headline reviews so far:
The Gamer – 7/10
Okay, so I’ve been playing The Dying World, and it’s a bit of a mixed bag. It clearly had a rough start with early access, and you can still see some of that. The story jumps around a lot, and some threads just feel… incomplete. When it does hit its stride, though, it’s amazing! It’s just frustrating because there’s so much cool stuff hinted at that never really gets fully developed. It feels like it could have been something truly special.
Loot Level Chill – 6.5/10
Greedfall 2: The Dying World tries to deliver an exciting pirate adventure on the high seas, but it gets complicated by heavy political themes and suffers from confusing, overlapping gameplay mechanics.
Tech Radar Gaming – 2.5/5
GreedFall: The Dying World had the potential to be a major success and establish a strong foundation for the game’s world – potentially giving the developers, Spiders, a breakout hit. Although the game features stunning environments like forests and cities, it doesn’t quite succeed in offering a compelling strategic experience or a story that effectively tackles its complex themes.
Will you be picking up GreedFall: The Dying World, or has this sequel lost your interest already?
