Disney’s upcoming live-action remake of Tangled has found its Mother Gothel, but it’s not who was first announced. Initially, reports suggested Scarlett Johansson, known for her role in Black Widow, was in discussions to play the villain, a character originally voiced by Donna Murphy. However, due to scheduling conflicts with her commitments to Mike Flanagan’s The Exorcist and The Batman – Part II, Johansson is no longer involved.
Disney has confirmed that Kathryn Hahn will be playing Mother Gothel in the upcoming live-action remake of Tangled. Hahn is well-known for her role as Agatha Harkness in WandaVision and its spin-off, Agatha All Along, as well as appearances in shows like Parks and Recreation and Mrs. Fletcher, and films such as Step Brothers and Bad Moms. Rumors about her casting began circulating in January 2026, and Disney officially announced the news with a video of Hahn wearing a Mother Gothel t-shirt, accompanied by the message, “You want her to be the bad guy? FINE. Kathryn Hahn is Mother Gothel in Disney’s live-action Tangled.” You can watch the video below.
Lashana Lynch is continuing a tradition of talented actors portraying Disney villains in live-action films. Several of her Marvel Cinematic Universe colleagues have taken on these roles, including Angelina Jolie as Maleficent, Cate Blanchett as Lady Tremaine in Cinderella, Chiwetel Ejiofor as Scar in The Lion King, Jude Law as Captain Hook in Peter Pan & Wendy, Idris Elba as Shere Khan in The Jungle Book, and Glenn Close as Cruella de Vil. Lynch was a popular choice among fans to play Mother Gothel, and this casting is likely to be well-received, even by those who are becoming weary of Disney’s live-action remakes.
Michael Gracey, the director of The Greatest Showman, will direct the upcoming live-action Tangled film. Tegan Croft, known for her role as Raven in Titans, will play Rapunzel – a character originally voiced by Mandy Moore in the 2010 animated movie. Milo Manheim, famous for Disney Channel’s Zombie and Paramount+’s School Spirits, will take on the role of Flynn Rider, previously voiced by Zachary Levi. The screenplay will be written by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, who wrote and directed the Netflix film Do Revenge and the sequel I Know What You Did Last Summer.

The first Tangled movie came out in theaters on November 24, 2010, and, along with The Princess and the Frog from the year before, helped start a new, successful period for Walt Disney Animation. This era included films like Wreck-It Ralph, Frozen, Big Hero 6, Zootopia, and Moana. Disney paused plans for a Tangled remake after the 2025 film Snow White didn’t perform well at the box office. However, the huge success of Lilo & Stitch – earning over $1 billion worldwide – changed Disney’s thinking about which movies to remake. They canceled remakes of older films like The Aristocats and Robin Hood, but decided to move forward with remakes of more recent hits like Moana and Tangled. While Tangled doesn’t have a release date yet, with casting underway, an announcement about when it will be released is likely coming soon.
