The latest trailer for Avatar: Fire & Ash presents a frightening possibility for the Na’vi: could humans find a way to survive on Pandora without needing special breathing equipment?
In the first Avatar film, when Jake Sully lands on Pandora, all humans must wear masks outdoors. This is because the atmosphere on the moon contains a lot of carbon dioxide, which makes the air toxic and unbreathable for them.
The situation reached a critical point during Jake’s final fight with Quaritch. His human body was ejected from its connection unit and began to succumb to the harsh environment. To save him, Neytiri had to permanently transfer his spirit and mind into his avatar.
Based on the latest trailer for Avatar 3, it appears humans can actually breathe the air on Pandora without needing a filter.
Spider breathes Pandoran air in Avatar: Fire and Ash trailer
In the latest trailer, around the 1 minute and 20 second mark, blue, glowing strands appear to enter Spider’s mouth and nose. Immediately after, he’s shown standing without his mask, and the villain, Varang-leader of the Ash People-asks him, “How are you still alive?”
Jake then asks a scientist, “What if people didn’t need masks to live here?”
Honestly, at first glance, it seems like a cool idea, but then it hits you – Pandora’s atmosphere is a *huge* problem. It’s what keeps it so unique, but also what makes it so hard – and maybe impossible – for humans to really settle there. The character points out, and it’s heartbreaking, that if things continue, the Na’vi won’t survive. It’s a really powerful moment.
Allowing humans to breathe on Pandora could endanger all life on the moon. Plus, as the late Jon Landau mentioned, part of Avatar 4 will be set on Earth.

He explained to Empire Magazine that while issues like overpopulation and dwindling resources are creating challenges, they don’t believe the future is hopeless. The films also explore the possibility of positive change.
There are good and bad people, and the same is true among the Na’vi. However, people rarely think of themselves as being ‘bad.’ It makes you wonder what causes someone to become what we consider evil – perhaps there are hidden factors we don’t understand.
Here’s a worrying thought: if people are hunting whales on Pandora for a supposed anti-aging fluid called Amrita, they might eventually colonize the planet and deplete its resources, leaving it as lifeless as Earth.
