Nintendo is famous for games you can play by yourself, like The Legend of Zelda and Mario. But there are also a lot of great games where you can play with a friend on the Nintendo Switch! You might even be surprised to find co-op shooting games, since Nintendo is often known for games that are suitable for the whole family.
The top co-op games on the Switch are genuinely excellent – they’re not just good because they’re on Nintendo. These games are immediately enjoyable and stand up to the best co-op experiences available on any system. If you’re looking for fun games to play with friends on your Switch, these are must-haves.
I’m really excited about Starlink: Battle for Atlas! It’s a sci-fi shooter set in space where you fly and customize your own starship. You can play through a whole campaign on different planets by yourself, or team up with a friend for co-op. What’s really cool is it has this feature where you can use physical ship parts in the game, kind of like Disney Infinity or Skylanders. But don’t worry, you absolutely don’t need to buy those extra parts to enjoy the game – I’ve heard it’s fully playable without them!
Although Starlink: Battle for Atlas is available on many systems, the Nintendo Switch version is special because it includes characters and elements from the Star Fox series. The game is perfect for short bursts of fun, especially when playing with a friend, as you experiment with different ships and upgrades.
The game looks fantastic, particularly on the Nintendo Switch. However, it doesn’t have online multiplayer, which limits how long you’ll likely play it, especially when compared to games like No Man’s Sky from 2016, which continues to receive significant updates and boasts a much larger online universe. Despite this, Starlink: Battle for Atlas is still a good choice on Switch if you’re looking for a sci-fi shooter. There’s also a lot of extra content available through downloadable packs that add new ships, weapons, and characters.
Resident Evil: Revelations is a scary action game where you try to survive against zombies. You play as different characters, exploring dangerous areas, solving puzzles, and battling creatures. You can play the story alone, team up with a friend locally, or play online with others in Raid Mode, which lets you choose from 15 characters and offers a special level for each one.
The game follows Claire Redfield and Moira Burton as they team up to survive and break free from captivity. Moira’s father, Barry Burton, also comes to the island looking for her, and they’re joined by Natalia, a young girl with unusual powers. This creates two separate storylines that players can experience, adding extra depth and replayability to an already exciting game.
The highlight of Resident Evil 2: Revelations is Raid Mode, where you can tackle missions and waves of enemies either by yourself or with a friend. While the graphics aren’t cutting-edge, the dark and scary atmosphere suits the game well and actually helps it run smoothly on the Switch. The game also features motion controls, which are mostly just a fun extra, but feel right at home on the Switch, just like they did on the Wii.
Borderlands: The Handsome Collection combines two popular Borderlands games, offering a blend of fast-paced shooting and character progression. While enjoyable on your own, the game truly shines when played with friends. You’ll team up to explore the world of Pandora, battle enemies, and collect a huge variety of bizarre weapons and gear, all within a gritty, futuristic setting.
This game follows a group of treasure hunters, called Vault Hunters, as they search for alien vaults filled with powerful technology and riches. These vaults are protected by dangerous enemies all over the planet. This package includes two full games and delivers a ton of content with the series’ trademark over-the-top humor.
If you enjoy games like Fallout and want something similar on your Switch, Borderlands is a great choice. It has fast-paced shooting and a bright, over-the-top style. The Borderlands series is consistently excellent, and it’s fantastic that two of the best games are now available on Switch.
Since the release of Splatoon 2 on July 21, 2017, Splatoon has been a popular multiplayer game on the Nintendo Switch. However, Splatoon 3, released in 2023, really raised the bar. While Splatoon 3 doesn’t drastically change the formula, its unique ink-based combat and several new features make it a truly exceptional game.
A standout feature of Splatoon 3 is the revamped Salmon Run, a cooperative mode where up to four players team up. The game is also more user-friendly thanks to streamlined menus, a cleaner interface, better graphics, and a consistently smooth frame rate of 60 FPS, making it more enjoyable to play with others. Plus, you can now test out weapons – both old and new – right in the main hub before heading into a match, which is a great convenience.
Splatoon 3 really shines thanks to small details, like its incredible music and surprisingly rich story. Even three years after it came out, the way characters move feels perfect, and it’s great that the game doesn’t rely on annoying purchases to progress.
