TikToker Vookum arrested after scammer pretending to be him steals $6,000

Vookum, who sells high-end watches online, says he was arrested at Newark airport and detained for three days. Florida authorities connected him to a $6,000 fraud committed by someone pretending to be him online.

Vookum, a TikToker known for selling luxury watches, said he was held on March 1st while getting ready to fly to the Bahamas with his girlfriend and her family. He shared this information in a video after he was released.

Police arrested him at the entrance and informed him about an outstanding warrant in Florida for grand larceny. He was then taken to Essex County Correctional Facility in Newark, New Jersey.

Vookum explained that the issue began when someone claimed they were defrauded in a Facebook Marketplace transaction using an account falsely representing him. He stated the charges were dismissed after his attorney proved to authorities that an imposter, not him, had conducted the sale.

Vookum says impersonator used his name in Facebook scam

So, apparently Vookum found out why he was being arrested about 40 to 60 minutes after they took him into custody at the airport. It was a bit of a wait to get the details, honestly.

In a video, he explained that officers told him he was arrested due to a grand larceny charge in Florida involving property valued between $5,000 and $10,000.

Officials considered this a possible attempt to escape the country, as he was already making plans for an international trip.

Vookum says his business partner informed him that someone in Florida sent $6,000 to a fake account on Facebook Marketplace. This account was pretending to be Vookum and used his name to sell a watch. The buyer never received the watch after sending the money.

He explained that someone on Facebook defrauded another user while posing as “Vookum.” Apparently, the scammer convinced someone to send $6,000 for a watch that was heavily discounted – likely too good to be true – but the buyer never received the product.

Man, it was a whole ordeal. After they booked me, took my fingerprints, and bounced me around a bunch of different holding cells, I ended up spending two nights at Essex County Correctional Facility while my lawyer tried to sort things out. Apparently, Florida could have asked for me to be transferred there, and that would’ve meant a seriously long jail stay. Luckily, that didn’t happen!

His lawyer said the issue could resolve in a few days, but might take as long as three months. He also explained that Florida authorities need to formally bring him back to Florida to face any charges.

Vookum was released on March 3rd after his lawyer explained to Florida officials that someone had falsely pretended to be him. Once officials realized he had been impersonated, the charges were dropped.

He explained that the charges against him were dropped because he hadn’t done anything wrong.

The content creator made a video to caution people against purchasing watches from unverified sources claiming to be affiliated with him. He clarified that his only official social media accounts are on Instagram and TikTok under the username @Vookum, and he doesn’t sell products through any other social media accounts.

He stated he only wants to sell items either through his eBay live auctions or directly to customers who are physically present with him.
