Milla Jovovich’s New R-Rated Thriller Continues Disappointing 7-Year Rotten Tomatoes Streak

Milla Jovovich’s latest movie, Protector, continues a very unfortunate trend on Rotten Tomatoes.

For the last seven years, Milla Jovovich’s films have consistently been met with harsh criticism, receiving largely negative reviews.

The new thriller, Protector, isn’t resonating with critics. Currently in theaters, it has a low 20% score on Rotten Tomatoes and continues a seven-year trend of poorly received films. Reviews describe it as silly, unoriginal, and a confusing mess, with one critic advising audiences to avoid it altogether. The one bright spot seems to be Milla Jovovich’s performance.

Beyond its poor reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, Protector faced a tough release weekend, debuting alongside popular movies like Hoppers and The Bride! and just a week after Scream 7.

Adrian Grünberg, who directed Rambo: Last Blood, also directed Protector, based on a screenplay by Bong-Seob Mun. Notably, Rambo: Last Blood was critically panned, earning a 26% rating and even winning a Razzie Award for being the worst prequel, remake, rip-off, or sequel.

The film Protector stars Milla Jovovich as Nikki, a former soldier who takes matters into her own hands when her daughter is kidnapped, choosing to rescue her outside of legal channels. The cast also includes Matthew Modine, D.B. Sweeney, Don Harvey, Arica Himmel, Michael Stahl-David, and Isabel Myers.

Milla Jovovich’s most recent film to receive positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes was 2019’s Paradise Hills, with a score of 68%. Her subsequent movies haven’t fared as well, earning scores between 14% and 44%. These include Worldbreaker (43%), In the Lost Lands (24%), Breathe (14%), Monster Hunter (44%), and The Rookies (21%).

Before appearing in Paradise Hills, the actor starred in a string of over twelve poorly reviewed films, including Future World and Faces in the Crowd, both of which received a 0% rating. Milla Jovovich’s most critically acclaimed movie is Richard Linklater’s Dazed and Confused (1993), which holds a 94% rating. Her second highest-rated film is Spike Lee’s He Got Game from 1998, scoring 82%.

Milla Jovovich began her career as a model before landing her first major film role in The Fifth Element with Bruce Willis. She’s since appeared in many popular movies, including Chaplin, Zoolander and Zoolander 2. She’s also well-known for the Resident Evil series – featuring films like Resident Evil, Apocalypse, Extinction, Afterlife, Retribution, and The Final Chapter – and the 2019 Hellboy reboot.

She’s received several award nominations for her work in these films, such as Best Fight for The Fifth Element at the MTV Movie & TV Awards and Best Actress for Resident Evil at the Saturn Awards.

She’s also received nominations for the Razzie Awards, which recognize the year’s worst movies, for her roles in The Messenger: The Story of Joan of Arc, Resident Evil: Retribution, and In the Lost Lands.

Milla Jovovich has made appearances on several TV shows, including guest spots on Married…with Children, King of the Hill, and Robot Chicken, as well as episodes of Project Runway and Lip Sync Battle. She’s also been in a few music videos, notably one with Lenny Kravitz for his song “If You Can’t Say No.”

Protector is now playing in theaters.
