Henry Cavill’s Voltron Live-Action Movie Release Window Revealed

The company is currently developing several projects, including a live-action Voltron movie. Adapting Voltron for the screen has been a goal for over twenty years, and progress finally began when Amazon MGM Studios signed on to distribute the film in 2022.

According to The Wrap, the live-action Voltron movie is now scheduled to come out in 2027, after facing numerous delays. While there’s no specific date yet, fans can be optimistic after the project spent so long in development.

What to Know About the Voltron Movie

Plans for a live-action Voltron movie, based on the 1980s animated series Voltron: Defender of the Universe, were first revealed in July 2005. Since then, many different producers and writers have worked on bringing the story to the big screen.

Things didn’t really come together until March 2022, when a new storyline was revealed, developed by director Rawson Marshall Thurber (known for films like Skyscraper and Red Notice). The following month, Amazon MGM Studios began discussions to acquire the distribution rights.

As a huge animation fan, I was really following the progress of Voltron. It felt like forever, but about two more years went by with not much news. Then, things finally started happening – they announced a fantastic new cast! Alongside the original team, they brought on Sterling K. Brown, Rita Ora, John Harlan Kim, Alba Baptista, Samson Kayo, Tharanya Tharan, Laura Gordon, and Tim Griffin, which got me even more excited for the show.

Since then, several other stars have been added to the list, including Nathan Jones, Keanu Karim, Kevin Spink, Roberto Zenca, Becki Cross Trujillo, and Matthew Scully.

A new movie tells the story of a teenager still mourning his mother’s death who discovers she was a famous hero – a pilot who fought to protect the galaxy. When a powerful villain, Zarkon, escapes and attacks her home planet, the teen must take up his mother’s mantle, pilot her robotic lion, and join forces with a team of heroes to save the universe.

Okay, so the casting for this looks really interesting. I’m hearing that Ora will be taking on the role of Haggar the Dark Witch, and I think that’s a fantastic fit. Henry Cavill is stepping in as King Alfor, which, honestly, feels like perfect casting – he’s got that regal presence. And K. Brown will be playing the big bad, Zarkon, which should be a lot of fun to watch. Overall, a strong lineup of actors!

Production on the Voltron movie kicked off in December 2024 and wrapped mid-2025 in Australia.

What’s Next for Henry Cavill?

Henry Cavill has quickly become a fan-favorite actor for adaptations of popular stories. He’s already played iconic characters like Superman, Geralt of Rivia in The Witcher, and Sherlock Holmes. Being a passionate gamer himself, he’s eager to bring more of his favorite game and story worlds to the screen.

Besides Voltron, he’s also working on a new action fantasy film currently being made. Chad Stahelski is directing, and the movie features Russell Crowe, Dave Bautista, and Karen Gillan.

I’m hearing things are still a bit rocky with this upcoming series, but the lead actor is really stepping up. Not only is he starring, but he’s also an executive producer and, get this, he’s personally going through all the established backstory and details – basically a deep dive into the ‘lore’ – to try and get the project back on track. It’s a smart move, showing serious commitment, and hopefully it’ll be enough to overcome the latest hurdles.

Voltron is expected to premiere in theaters in 2027.
