HBO has released a trailer for the upcoming Green Lantern TV show, titled ‘Lanterns,’ and it hints that a significant hero may die in the DC Universe. Losing characters is a common and important part of superhero storytelling – in comics, cartoons, movies, and more – and many of DC’s most successful films have involved major character deaths.
As a huge DC fan, it’s been rough watching so many heroes fall over the years. I remember being shocked when characters like Rick Flag, Superman, Supergirl, and even Michael Keaton’s Batman bit the dust in the old DCEU continuity. And honestly, James Gunn’s new DC Universe is already starting down that same path – we’ve already seen Nina Mazursky and Princess Ilana Rostovic get written out. It wasn’t just the movies either; The Penguin show on TV was pretty brutal with its kills. Now, with HBO’s Lanterns series, it feels like we might be bracing for even more characters to meet their end.
HBO’s Green Lantern Series Trailer Teases A Major Death
Ever since 60-year-old Kyle Chandler was chosen to play Hal Jordan, DC fans have wondered if his character would die relatively early in the new DC Universe. That possibility seems more likely now, as the trailer for HBO’s upcoming ‘Lanterns’ series may be hinting at Hal Jordan’s death. If that happens, Aaron Pierre’s character, John Stewart, would likely take his place.
The trailer for Lanterns shows Hal Jordan telling John Stewart he intends to remain a Green Lantern for the rest of his life, stating, “As long as I’m alive, that ain’t changing.” This strongly suggests that John won’t become the primary Green Lantern in the DC Universe while Hal is still active, as the established hero doesn’t appear willing to step down.
Following those events, John bluntly tells someone, “You’re old, tired, and your time is up.” While everyone expected the HBO show to lead to John Stewart becoming the primary Green Lantern in the DC Universe, the trailer suggests Hal Jordan might be facing defeat. The hints are strong that the older hero won’t survive.
Why Hal Jordan Dying In The DCU Would Make Sense
I’m hoping DC doesn’t kill off Hal Jordan too quickly. After the Green Lantern movie starring Ryan Reynolds didn’t do well, it’s taken a long time for the character to get another chance in live-action, and he deserves a proper story. However, if DC wants to clearly establish John Stewart as the Green Lantern for their new universe, Hal’s death could actually make sense.
As a huge movie fan, I’ve been thinking about Hal Jordan’s fate, and honestly, killing him off could really work for the story in a couple of ways. First, it explains why he’s not around anymore – the trailer pretty much showed us he wouldn’t willingly hand over the Lantern ring. Plus, if Hal died after connecting with John and mentoring him, that would give Aaron Pierre’s character a ton of emotional weight to carry, making his hero’s journey way more interesting.
Hal Jordan is currently the most well-known Green Lantern in the DC Universe. If he were to step down, fans would likely always want to see him return. Removing Hal Jordan as an option allows John Stewart to become the leading Green Lantern in both the comic series Lanterns and the broader DC Universe.
