Henry Cavill’s Voltron Movie Gets Exciting Release Date Window

Voltron live-action movie sets release date window

The live-action Voltron series is currently planned to be released sometime in 2027. Amazon MGM Studios hasn’t announced an exact date yet, but the update signals that the show is progressing well after a long period of development, according to The Wrap.

The studio acquired the rights to distribute the film in 2022, and production began rapidly. Filming took place in Australia from late 2024 to mid-2025, leaving plenty of time for editing and special effects. This extensive post-production work is especially important for a movie about five robot lions that combine to form one giant warrior.

The original Voltron cartoon first aired in 1984 and lasted for over 100 episodes. The show featured pilots who controlled five robotic lions that combined to form the powerful Voltron, and they fought villains like King Zarkon and Haggar. Since then, the franchise has continued with different versions, including shows like Voltron: The Third Dimension, Voltron Force, and Netflix’s Voltron: Legendary Defender, as well as comic books and video games.

Henry Cavill is set to play King Alfor, with Rita Ora as Haggar the Dark Witch and Sterling K. Brown as Zarkon. The cast also includes Daniel Quinn-Toye, Alba Baptista, John Harlan Kim, Tharanya Tharan, and Samson Kayo, as well as Tim Griffin, Laura Gordon, Keanu Karim, Nathan Jones, and Kevin Spink. Becki Cross Trujillo, Roberto Zenca, and Matthew Scully complete the impressive lineup.

Rawson Marshall Thurber, known for directing action comedies like Red Notice, Central Intelligence, and Skyscraper, is directing the live-action Voltron movie. He worked on the script with Ellen Shanman and is producing the film with Todd Lieberman, Bob Koplar, and David Hoberman.
