The TV show Once Upon a Time mainly takes place in the town of Storybrooke, Maine, where characters from fairy tales and Disney movies live. A curse has made them forget who they really are. The show often flashes back to their original lives in a magical place called the Enchanted Forest. It ran for seven seasons on ABC – which is part of Disney – and you can now watch all episodes on Disney+. The series features both classic characters like Snow White and Prince Charming, and newer Disney favorites like Elsa from Frozen and Merida from Brave. Their daughter, Emma Swan, is the main character.
Each season of Once Upon A Time takes beloved fairy tale characters and stories and reimagines them in surprising ways, often revealing heartbreaking pasts. For example, before she became the Evil Queen, Regina Mills suffered a great loss and spent years blaming Snow White, fueling a desire for revenge. Similarly, the show reveals that Red Riding Hood is actually a werewolf and Peter Pan is a villain who prioritizes eternal life over his family. These daring choices set Once Upon A Time apart and make it more compelling than Disney’s live-action remakes.
Once Upon A Time’s Premise Saves It From The Live-Action Remakes’ Pitfalls
One of the main criticisms of Disney’s live-action remakes is that they often don’t take enough risks and struggle to measure up to the original animated films. The show Once Upon A Time avoids this pitfall by offering a fresh perspective on classic stories, rather than simply retelling them or creating almost identical copies.
A story where Peter Pan is the bad guy and Captain Hook tries to become a better person is much more interesting than another predictable Peter Pan remake. The same is true for storylines like Rumplestiltskin and Belle finding love and enjoying a peaceful retirement, or Tinker Bell rescuing Regina – these unexpected twists are far more captivating.
As a big fan of fairy tales, I have to say that Once Upon a Time quickly became its own thing – it really diverged from the original stories and Disney movies pretty early on. Honestly, that’s a good thing! It meant I could enjoy the show for what it was instead of constantly comparing it to the animated classics and feeling let down. Not every idea they tried worked perfectly, and maybe the show ran a little too long, but it consistently proved there’s value in revisiting familiar tales and finding fresh perspectives within them. It showed me that remakes can be creatively worthwhile.
