Thanos is incredibly powerful, famously using the Infinity Stones to eliminate half of all life. However, despite his immense strength and the fear he inspires, there are even more powerful, ancient beings in the broader multiverse.
The Marvel universe is incredibly expansive, meaning there’s almost always someone even stronger than its most powerful beings – even someone more powerful than villains like Thanos. The MCU features characters – from ancient, god-like entities to powerful Celestial judges – who aren’t just on par with Thanos, but actually surpass his strength.
Wanda Maximoff Nearly Defeated Thanos During the Battle of Earth
Despite not being able to beat Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War, the Scarlet Witch is undoubtedly more powerful. She inherited abilities from both her mutant genes and the Mind Stone, making her one of the strongest beings in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Her powers include altering reality, using chaos magic, and levitating objects.
Wanda Maximoff is more powerful than Thanos, as demonstrated by her performance during the Battle of Earth in Avengers: Endgame. She could have defeated him quickly if not for an attack on the battlefield that interrupted her. Without the Infinity Stones, Thanos is no match for the Scarlet Witch, who has become even stronger since their last encounter.
Hela Is the Embodiment of Death Itself
In Thor: Ragnarok, a remarkably powerful villain named Hela is introduced. As the goddess of death and Odin’s first child, her strength is directly linked to the realm of Asgard. She’s ultimately defeated when the Fire Giant Surtur brings about Ragnarok, but rumors suggest she may still be out there, waiting for a chance to get revenge on Thor.
Although Hela and Thanos never faced off in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, a fight between them wouldn’t have been much of a contest. In the comics, Thanos tries to impress Death with violent acts, hoping to win her favor. However, Hela is a goddess who is death itself, making her far more powerful than Thanos and capable of easily defeating him.
Eternity Is One of the Elder Beings of the Universe
The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has only begun to explore the truly ancient and powerful cosmic forces within its world. These include incredibly old beings who existed even before life began. One of these powerful, ancient beings is Eternity, who is essentially the living embodiment of the entire universe and has close ties to other similar cosmic entities, like Infinity.
Even someone as strong as Thanos isn’t comparable to the Elder Beings, who possess unimaginable power. In the comics, Eternity and others like him don’t even pay attention to Thanos until he’s already collected all the Infinity Stones. However, they are still more powerful than him. If Eternity intervened, he could easily stop Thanos and his destructive plans.
Arishem the Judge May Still Return to Destroy Earth
The Celestials are incredibly powerful beings introduced in the 2021 movie, Eternals. The most important of these ancient beings is Arishem the Judge, who sends the Eternals to Earth to battle the Deviants. Arishem sees himself as a universal judge, and his appearance usually brings disaster to any planet that witnesses it.
Fans of the comics know that the Celestials are incredibly powerful beings, and Arishem is one of the strongest. Some believe Thanos wiped out half of all life to prevent a conflict with these Celestials, who consume planets as part of a process called “Emergence.” Now that Thanos’s actions have been reversed and the Eternals seem to be causing more trouble in the universe, Arishem and the other Celestials might return, potentially targeting Earth.
Galactus Is the Devourer of Worlds With the Power Cosmic
As a huge MCU fan, I’m really excited – and a little scared – about Galactus. He’s being set up as a seriously powerful villain in this Multiverse Saga. They call him ‘the Destroyer of Worlds’ for a reason – this guy literally eats planets to satisfy his endless hunger! We saw a glimpse of his power in The Fantastic Four: First Steps, where he almost wiped out an entire Earth – Earth-828, to be exact. The Fantastic Four managed to save their world, but it was a close call, and they only did it by sending him far, far away. Honestly, it felt like they just delayed the inevitable with Galactus, not stopped him.
Galactus is one of the most powerful beings in the Marvel Universe. His power source, the Power Cosmic, far exceeds the power of even all the Infinity Stones combined. Even without the completed Infinity Gauntlet, he’s typically much stronger than Thanos at his full potential.
