TED Season 2 Ending Explained: What Happens After Ted & John Graduate?

Warning! Spoilers ahead for Ted’s season 2 finale.

The season 2 finale of Ted features surprising events that will likely have a big impact on the show’s future. The live-action prequel series, created by Seth MacFarlane and based on his popular Ted films, was a hit when it launched on Peacock in 2024, quickly leading to a second season.

Season 2 of Ted is full of unexpected twists – from Ted’s affair and Susan’s imprisonment to the family’s unusual Dungeons & Dragons game. But the most shocking moment might be in the eighth episode, “Fraudcast News,” where Matty suffers a heart attack and his doctor stresses the importance of remaining calm during his recovery.

Then, the news breaks that O.J. Simpson has been found not guilty in his murder trial, and the Bennett family goes to hilarious lengths to hide it from their very traditional father. They create fake newspapers and even film their own fake news reports, all to keep him happily unaware. It’s a funny episode, but it makes you wonder if there’s a bigger point to it all.

Ted & John’s Fake News Explained

Matty, like many conservative white people back then, firmly believed O.J. Simpson was guilty of the murders of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman. When the jury acquitted Simpson, his family, the Bennetts, worried he’d become extremely upset – potentially triggering another heart attack. This fear prompted them to create a somewhat crazy plan to shield him from the news.

The friends return to their former school, sneak inside, and use the printing press to make a fake edition of the Boston Globe. The headline proclaims Simpson has been convicted and imprisoned, but they quickly realize simply having the front page isn’t enough – they need to create the entire newspaper.

The creators fill the rest of the fake news site with stories they think Matty will enjoy, like claims that the US won the Vietnam War, kangaroos don’t exist, and Jane Fonda, a well-known supporter of Vietnam, has made offensive statements. To prevent Matty from watching television, they tell him the cable isn’t working, but they quickly “fix” it when he threatens to contact the cable company himself.

The plan now includes fake TV news broadcasts. They enlist the actor they previously met to play two roles: a cable repairman and a news anchor who announces the fabricated Simpson verdict. This effectively creates a 1990s version of what we now know as a social media bubble, poking fun at the way online echo chambers reinforce existing beliefs, particularly among conservatives.

Why Matty Isn’t Mad About The Scam

Matty suffers another heart attack when he finds out Simpson was acquitted. However, he’s surprisingly calm when Ted and John admit to their deception. His initial heart attack stemmed from his frustration with John for wasting the summer with Ted instead of pursuing work or higher education.

When Matty discovers John is behind all the fabricated news, he’s surprisingly impressed by his son’s drive and work ethic. He’d always considered John lazy and lacking motivation, but this elaborate scheme reveals a hidden potential he never knew existed.

John’s Comic Strip Is A Nod To Seth MacFarlane’s Own Background

As John creates the fake newspapers, he also begins drawing his own comic strip, which is inspired by Seth MacFarlane’s own experiences as a child. MacFarlane got his start drawing comics for his local paper, and in the season finale of Ted, John is shown creating his own newspaper cartoon called “The Galumphs” – a humorous strip about a family. Many viewers see “The Galumphs” as an early version of MacFarlane’s later hit, Family Guy.

Ted Season 2 Finale’s Connection To Season 1 Explained

While the season 2 finale of Ted doesn’t directly follow the story from the season 1 finale, they share a similar theme. Both finales center around the O.J. Simpson case. Season 1 ended during the famous Ford Bronco chase as John was starting a new relationship, and season 2 begins with the announcement of the verdict.

Why John Goes To The Gym In The Final Scene

The season 2 finale of Ted ends with a surprising moment: Ted asks John about his plans, and John immediately takes him to the gym. John’s goal? To get incredibly muscular, even to the point where his friends and family worry about him. While unexpected, this scene foreshadows John’s future transformation into a physique similar to Mark Wahlberg’s.

How Ted Season 2 Sets Up A Possible Season 3

As a big fan of Ted, I’m still waiting to hear if Seth MacFarlane will make a third season, but the way season two ended definitely suggests there’s more story to tell. With Ted and John graduating and heading out on their own to find jobs and a place to live, a third season would really shake things up. It wouldn’t be the same cozy Bennett family dynamic we’ve seen before, and honestly, that’s part of what makes the idea so intriguing!
