Based on Margaret Atwood’s novel, The Handmaid’s Tale featured Elizabeth Moss as June, a woman living under a strict, controlling government called the Republic of Gilead. This government took over after environmental problems caused a drop in birth rates and led to the breakdown of society. The show, which aired for six seasons on Hulu, concluded with June determined to keep fighting for freedom, but the fate of her daughter Hannah – who was being raised as Agnes within Gilead – remained uncertain.
Introducing The Testaments, a new series inspired by Margaret Atwood’s sequel novel. Set four years after the events of The Handmaid’s Tale, the show features Chase Infinity as a young Hannah. While June remembers life before the rise of Gilead, Hannah was born and raised within this oppressive society. The series follows Hannah as she grows up at a school run by the formidable Aunt Lydia, played once again by Emmy winner Ann Dowd.
I just watched the first trailer for the new series and it’s really striking. It starts off feeling almost nostalgic, like a sweet look at school life, with The Cranberries’ “Dreams” playing as we see Hannah and her friends just hanging out. But then things quickly take a dark turn – we get glimpses of really disturbing stuff, like people hanging on this ominous “Wall,” and this chilling rhetoric about controlling women. By the end, you see Hannah and her friend Daisy, who’s experienced life outside of Gilead, gearing up to fight back, and honestly, that theme feels incredibly powerful and relevant, maybe even more so than when the original series started back in 2017.
The show’s cast features Mabel Li as Aunt Vidalia, Amy Seimetz as Paula, Brad Alexander as Garth, Rowan Blanchard as Shunammite, Mattea Conforti as Becka Grove, Zarrin Darnell-Martin as Aunt Gabbana, Eva Foote as Aunt Estee, Isolde Ardies as Huldah, Shechinah Mpumlwana as Jehosheba, Birva Pandya as Miriam, and Kira Guloien as Rosa. While it’s currently unknown if Elizabeth Moss will make an appearance, she has hinted that June’s story isn’t finished. As an executive producer, she’ll definitely have a say in how things unfold, and many expect she’ll appear on screen at some point, either this season or in the future.
The first three episodes of The Testaments will be available to stream all at once starting Wednesday, April 8th, with one new episode released each week after that. You can watch The Testaments on Hulu and Hulu through Disney+ in the U.S., and on Disney+ everywhere else.
